Array.some in JavaScript: overdue task alert

Build overdue task alert with Array.some. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A dashboard needs an alert if even one task is overdue. A yes-or-no decision does not require copying every matching task.

One of the two tasks is overdue: Approve design. That is enough for an alert. We will calculate a single true-or-false answer without building a second list of tasks, then check how the decision changes when none are overdue.

Overdue task alert: the original sample and its calculated result.
Overdue task alert: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The original result is true. Set Approve design overdue to false and update the preview; both tasks are now on time, so the result becomes false. Adding another on-time task does not change the existing alert while any overdue task remains.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try overdue task alert and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

some stops when one callback passes. The overdue design approval makes the result true.

The callback reads each overdue flag. some returns true as soon as one visited flag is truthy and can stop searching at that point. If none passes, it returns false. The result answers whether an alert is needed; it does not identify the overdue task or count overdue tasks.

const data = [
  {
    "task": "Send invoice",
    "overdue": false
  },
  {
    "task": "Approve design",
    "overdue": true
  }
];
const result = data.some(item => item.overdue);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

true

The source still contains both task records. A boolean alert can sit above the full list without replacing the list or removing completed items.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array some example.

Avoid the common mistake

An empty array returns false. Decide whether an empty list means no alert or missing data.

An empty list returns false because there is no passing task. That mathematical result cannot tell your interface whether tasks have not loaded yet. Track loading separately if that distinction matters. Also store real boolean flags: the string "false" is truthy and would incorrectly satisfy this callback.

Change one rule, then check it

Set every overdue flag to false and watch the alert change.

Try [], then add a task whose overdue value is true. Expect false and true respectively. If the alert should name every overdue task, use filter for that separate list; some should remain the small overall decision rather than carrying extra rendering responsibilities.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

An alert rule is easier to judge when its status changes while the tasks remain visible. Share the example and ask a reviewer to clear the overdue flag, then add another overdue task. That gives the alert wording and logic a concrete test.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.some do in this example?

some stops when one callback passes. The overdue design approval makes the result true.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.some?

An empty array returns false. Decide whether an empty list means no alert or missing data.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
