Array.toSpliced in JavaScript: compare agenda revisions

Build compare agenda revisions with Array.toSpliced. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An editor needs a revised agenda next to the approved proposal. Replacing one session should create a draft without overwriting the original.

The approved agenda contains Old workshop, while a proposed revision contains Live workshop. We will create the revised list with toSpliced and keep both versions available. That is useful when the change needs review before replacing an approved schedule.

Compare agenda revisions: the original sample and its calculated result.
Compare agenda revisions: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result shows Live workshop in the second position. The source still shows Old workshop. Compare all four sessions: only the requested session differs, while Welcome, Break, and Closing retain their relative order.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try compare agenda revisions and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

toSpliced returns the edited array with Live workshop in position two. The source stays unchanged.

The first 1 is the starting index, and the second 1 is how many entries to skip from the copy. "Live workshop" is inserted at that position. Unlike splice, the returned value is the complete revised array, not the removed entries. The original array is not rearranged.

const data = [
  "Welcome",
  "Old workshop",
  "Break",
  "Closing"
];
const result = data.toSpliced(1, 1, 'Live workshop');
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  "Welcome",
  "Live workshop",
  "Break",
  "Closing"
]

Look at the source before treating the revision as saved. Creating a proposed list does not automatically replace the current agenda in the rest of an application.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array toSpliced example.

Avoid the common mistake

Unlike splice, it returns the new array rather than removed entries. Copies remain shallow.

The returned array is a shallow copy. Sessions represented as nested objects remain shared references, so independently editing their fields needs another copy at that level. Also check browser compatibility for older targets; toSpliced is newer than the long-established splice method.

Change one rule, then check it

Insert an extra break and compare the draft length with the original.

For an extra break, use data.toSpliced(2, 0, "Coffee break"). The draft should have five sessions while the source still has four. With an empty source, an inserted session still appears in the draft. No removed-items array is returned in either case.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.
Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

An approved agenda and its draft are easier to compare in a working page than in two disconnected messages. Share the revision preview so a reviewer can propose an insertion and confirm which existing sessions remain untouched.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.toSpliced do in this example?

toSpliced returns the edited array with Live workshop in position two. The source stays unchanged.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.toSpliced?

Unlike splice, it returns the new array rather than removed entries. Copies remain shallow.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
