Array.concat in JavaScript: combine guest rosters

Build combine guest rosters with Array.concat. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Two teams have separate guest lists, but check-in needs one roster. Combining them should keep each team's original list available.

Mina and Sam are on the first guest list; Jo and Ari are on the second. Check-in needs Mina, Sam, Jo, Ari in one roster. We will combine the lists while keeping the first list available for its own team.

Combine guest rosters: the original sample and its calculated result.
Combine guest rosters: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result contains four names and the source still contains two. Add another name to the first list and update the preview: it appears before Jo and Ari. concat preserves the sequence supplied by each list rather than sorting the combined roster.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try combine guest rosters and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

concat returns a new array with the first list followed by Jo and Ari.

data.concat(["Jo", "Ari"]) starts with the source entries and appends the entries of the supplied array. It returns a new array. A non-array value such as "Lee" can also be appended as one item, but concat does not recursively unpack arbitrarily nested arrays.

const data = [
  "Mina",
  "Sam"
];
const result = data.concat(['Jo', 'Ari']);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  "Mina",
  "Sam",
  "Jo",
  "Ari"
]

The original list still belongs to its team. Combining a check-in roster does not require adding the other team’s guests back into that source list.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript array concat example.

Avoid the common mistake

It does not deduplicate. The same guest on both lists appears twice.

concat does not deduplicate. If Mina appears in both lists, the combined roster contains Mina twice. That may be intentional for identical display names, so choose a duplicate rule using a stable guest identifier rather than assuming every equal name is the same person.

Change one rule, then check it

Include Mina in the second list and choose a separate duplicate-removal rule.

An empty first list still returns Jo and Ari. Add Mina to the second list in Edit code and observe the duplicate. Then decide whether the interface should preserve it, warn about it, or deduplicate by an ID. Combining and validating the roster are separate steps.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Two teams can review a combined roster more clearly when their original list stays visible. Share this fictional example and let a reviewer test an empty first list or a repeated name before you settle the rules for real event data.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does Array.concat do in this example?

concat returns a new array with the first list followed by Jo and Ari.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.concat?

It does not deduplicate. The same guest on both lists appears twice.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
