callback in JavaScript: let a pricing step receive its next action

Explore callback through this working example: let a pricing step receive its next action. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A checkout prototype has one step that produces a subtotal and another that applies a discount. Passing the second step as a callback shows how a function can accept behavior instead of hardcoding every possible follow-up action.

The initial subtotal is 120 and the discount is fifteen, so the returned object contains total 105. processQuote does not know how a discount works. It receives an amount and another function, then lets that function decide which result to return. This small separation makes the idea of passing behavior visible without hiding it behind a large event system.

Follow the value through the operation

processQuote receives a value and a function, then invokes that callback with the value. This example's callback returns a plain object containing subtotal and discounted total, and the outer function returns it. All work happens synchronously; receiving a callback does not itself create asynchronous behavior.

The arrow function supplied at the call site is the callback. processQuote invokes it with the subtotal, and the callback reads the discount from this example's surrounding input. The outer function then returns the callback's object. That last return is important: invoking a callback does not automatically make its result become the result of its caller. The caller must deliberately return or otherwise use it.

Everything in this example runs synchronously. Callbacks can also appear in asynchronous APIs, but their definition is about receiving a function as an argument, not about waiting. Adding a timer here would introduce a separate scheduling concept before the basic value flow was clear. You can follow the amount from input, into processQuote, into the callback, and back out as a plain object.

Change the discount to twenty and expect total 100. Then modify the copied callback to return only the discounted number instead of an object. processQuote should still work because it returns whatever that callback returns. Finally, contrast passing amount => amount with writing a calculation call directly: one passes callable behavior, while the other runs immediately and passes its already-produced value.

Run let a pricing step receive its next action and inspect the returned value

Run the same calculation in your code

The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.

const data = {"subtotal":120,"discount":15};
const result = (()=>{function processQuote(amount,afterPricing){return afterPricing(amount);}return processQuote(data.subtotal,amount=>({subtotal:amount,total:amount-data.discount}));})();
console.log(result);

The original input produces this result:

{
  "subtotal": 120,
  "total": 105
}

The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.

Check the boundary before reusing it

Passing a function and calling a function are different operations. Do not write afterPricing() at the call site unless you intentionally want its result rather than its future behavior.

Change the discount, then replace the callback's returned object in the copied example. Keep the outer processing function unchanged to test the benefit of passing behavior.

Changed increases both subtotal and discount by one, leaving the total at 105. That unchanged total is expected subtraction behavior. Inspect the changed subtotal field too, then alter only the discount manually to isolate the callback’s pricing effect.

A compact let a pricing step receive its next action example to copy and adapt

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.

Once the discount example is clear, try the follow-up action your checkout actually needs. Share the runnable HTML as a link so a teammate can inspect the value passed into the callback and the value returned out. That keeps the conversation about behavior instead of treating every callback as asynchronous machinery.

Questions people ask

What does callback do in this example?

processQuote receives a value and a function, then invokes that callback with the value. This example's callback returns a plain object containing subtotal and discounted total, and the outer function returns it. All work happens synchronously; receiving a callback does not itself create asynchronous behavior.

What is the main mistake to avoid with callback?

Passing a function and calling a function are different operations. Do not write afterPricing() at the call site unless you intentionally want its result rather than its future behavior.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
