classes in JavaScript: model a booking with fields and a method

Explore classes through this working example: model a booking with fields and a method. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A booking widget repeatedly combines a session name, seat count, and summary behavior. A small class groups that initialization and behavior in one readable definition, so each booking can expose the same operation while holding its own data.

The first instance describes Launch workshop with twenty-four seats, and isBooking is true. The constructor receives the initial values and assigns the fields. summary then reads those fields through this when invoked on the instance. The result panel exposes a readable outcome while preserving the distinction between the instance, its data, and the method declared on the class.

Follow the value through the operation

Declare Booking with a constructor that initializes two fields and a summary instance method. Create an instance with new, then call its method and inspect instanceof. The display uses a plain result object because JSON does not serialize class methods as data fields.

Class syntax gives this object pattern a compact definition, but JavaScript still connects instances to prototype behavior. The summary method is not copied into each instance as an ordinary own data field. That is why serializing the booking as JSON would show its fields but not provide a callable summary method to another environment. This example calls the method first and returns its text explicitly for inspection.

Using new is required for this class. Calling Booking as an ordinary function fails rather than acting as a casual factory. The constructor also does not establish availability, reserve seats, or save the record to a service; it initializes an in-memory object. Keeping that responsibility small helps you recognize which behavior a later booking workflow must still implement outside the class.

Change the seat count to thirty and inspect the summary. In the standalone code, create a second Booking with a different name, then edit only the first instance's seats. Their fields should remain independent. You can compare their summary method references to see shared prototype behavior, but do not confuse that shared method with shared field values. The static-method lesson covers utilities called on Booking itself rather than on these individual instances.

Run model a booking with fields and a method and inspect the returned value

Run the same calculation in your code

The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.

const data = {"name":"Launch workshop","seats":24};
const result = (()=>{class Booking{constructor(name,seats){this.name=name;this.seats=seats;}summary(){return this.name+': '+this.seats+' seats';}}const booking=new Booking(data.name,data.seats);return {summary:booking.summary(),isBooking:booking instanceof Booking};})();
console.log(result);

The original input produces this result:

{
  "summary": "Launch workshop: 24 seats",
  "isBooking": true
}

The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.

Check the boundary before reusing it

Classes must be constructed with new, and class bodies run in strict mode. They still use JavaScript's prototype-based model rather than copying each declared method onto every new instance.

Change the booking input and inspect its summary. In the copied snippet, create two instances with different seats and compare their independent fields and shared method behavior.

Changed supplies zero seats, and the summary displays that count while isBooking remains true. The class still constructs the same kind of instance. If zero is not permitted in your application, add validation rather than assuming class syntax supplies that policy.

A compact model a booking with fields and a method example to copy and adapt

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.

Before growing the booking class, have another person check what belongs to each instance and what behavior is shared. Share this runnable HTML as a link so they can vary the name and seats and inspect the summary. Keep reservation and storage requirements separate from this in-memory model review.

Questions people ask

What does class do in this example?

Declare Booking with a constructor that initializes two fields and a summary instance method. Create an instance with new, then call its method and inspect instanceof. The display uses a plain result object because JSON does not serialize class methods as data fields.

What is the main mistake to avoid with class?

Classes must be constructed with new, and class bodies run in strict mode. They still use JavaScript's prototype-based model rather than copying each declared method onto every new instance.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
