const in JavaScript: reviewed schedule card

Explore const through this working example: reviewed schedule card. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A schedule card has a fixed object reference but gains a reviewed flag after a local check. The result demonstrates what const actually protects: replacing the binding is forbidden, while editing a property on the referenced object remains possible.

The finished schedule card keeps its title and reports reviewed true. The binding is declared with const, but updating the reviewed property succeeds. That visible result corrects a common misunderstanding: a constant binding does not automatically make every part of its referenced object immutable. The card can keep one object reference while its local properties change.

Build the working example

const data = {"title":"Draft schedule"};
const result = (()=>{const card={title:String(data?.title??'Untitled'),reviewed:false};card.reviewed=true;return card;})();
console.log(result);

The const declaration binds card to a newly created object. Setting its reviewed property to true changes that object without assigning a new value to the binding. The preview returns the supplied title and the updated flag; the original input remains untouched.

The function creates a new card object from the supplied title and an initial false reviewed flag. Const prevents assigning a different value to the card binding. The next statement does not do that; it updates reviewed on the existing object. Returning card then shows the title with true. This is different from Object.freeze, which restricts changes to an object's own properties, and from let, which would permit assigning a replacement object to the binding. The original input is untouched because the example creates a new object instead of assigning card directly to data.

The original input returns:

{
  "title": "Draft schedule",
  "reviewed": true
}

Run the reviewed schedule card operation and compare its source with the output.

Test the boundary that matters

Change the source title to Final schedule and verify that the returned card uses that title with reviewed true. An empty object uses Untitled and still creates a reviewed card. Notice that the source view does not gain a reviewed property, because the output object is separate. A title fallback is enough for this language demonstration, but a real publishing workflow should validate the required title and track who actually reviewed it. Setting a local flag in code is not evidence of an approval event.

Changing the sample reveals the behavior of the reviewed schedule card.

Edit the reviewed schedule card sample and test the cases described above.

Const does not freeze objects or arrays. It prevents reassignment of the binding, while mutation rules depend on the referenced value and any separate freezing strategy.

If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.

Make one useful change

Add a notes property to the local card and observe it in the result. Explain why assigning an entirely new object to card would fail.

For the exercise, add notes to the local object and expect that property beside the title and reviewed flag. Next consider assigning card to an entirely new object: that would be reassignment and fail for const. If you need to prevent property changes as well, study the separate Object.freeze lesson and its shallow behavior. Choosing const remains useful for signaling a stable reference, even when the object's deliberate local updates are allowed.

A teammate can use this card to distinguish a stable object reference from a frozen schedule. Share the complete reviewed card example through NOS and ask them to test a title change and an added property. The sample clarifies the language rule before it becomes part of a review interface, without claiming that a Boolean property creates a stored approval or audit trail.

For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: const.

Questions people ask

What does const do in this example?

The const declaration binds card to a newly created object. Setting its reviewed property to true changes that object without assigning a new value to the binding. The preview returns the supplied title and the updated flag; the original input remains untouched.

What is the main mistake to avoid with const?

Const does not freeze objects or arrays. It prevents reassignment of the binding, while mutation rules depend on the referenced value and any separate freezing strategy.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
