let in JavaScript: remaining equipment count

Explore let through this working example: remaining equipment count. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A supply desk begins with six kits and records two as used. The remaining count needs to change during the calculation while the original input remains available for comparison, making a mutable local binding useful and easy to inspect.

The finished equipment card reports starting 6 and remaining 4 after two kits are used. The input record stays available for comparison while a local count changes during the calculation. Let is useful here because reassignment is part of the intended operation, and the binding only needs to exist within this function rather than on the surrounding page.

Build the working example

const data = {"starting":6,"used":2};
const result = (()=>{if(!data||!Number.isFinite(data.starting)||!Number.isFinite(data.used))return 'Enter numeric stock values';let remaining=data.starting;remaining-=data.used;return {starting:data.starting,remaining};})();
console.log(result);

Let creates a block scoped remaining binding initialized from the starting count. The subtraction assignment updates that binding to 4. Returning both starting and remaining shows that changing the local number does not rewrite the input object's starting property.

Remaining begins with the numeric value read from starting. The subtraction assignment takes used away from that local binding, giving 4 for the original sample. The return includes the original starting property and the new remaining value. Changing the local number does not mutate data.starting because primitive numbers are values rather than an editable shared object reference. This differs from const, which would prevent reassignment of remaining, and var, which has function scope rather than block scope. None of those declarations automatically imposes an inventory policy; they determine binding behavior, not whether a stock calculation should be accepted.

The original input returns:

{
  "starting": 6,
  "remaining": 4
}

Run the remaining equipment count operation and compare its source with the output.

Test the boundary that matters

Set used to 6 and expect remaining 0. Set used to 7 and this focused example returns remaining negative 1. Both fields are still finite numbers, so the existing validation accepts them. An empty object instead returns Enter numeric stock values because the required fields are missing. These checks separate numeric validation from a domain rule such as used cannot exceed starting. If the page represents actual stock, add that rule explicitly rather than assuming the mutable variable will prevent an impossible balance.

Edit the remaining equipment count sample and test the cases described above.

Let allows reassignment, but it does not automatically validate values or prevent negative inventory. Domain rules still need explicit checks when used stock exceeds the starting count.

If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.

Make one useful change

Set used equal to starting and then larger than it. Add a domain check if your real inventory must never report a negative balance.

For the exercise, decide whether your equipment policy permits a negative remaining count. If not, reject used greater than starting before performing the subtraction, and expect a validation message for 7 used out of 6. You may also reject negative starting or used values. Keep the original input alongside the result so a reviewer can explain a rejection from the supplied values. Do not silently clamp the balance to zero if that would hide an inconsistent record.

The equipment calculation is now clear enough for the person managing kits to review its policy. Share the complete remaining count preview with NOS and ask them to test full usage and overuse. Their answer determines the domain checks to add before the same arithmetic is connected to a real stock record, rather than leaving those rules implicit in a variable declaration.

For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: let.

Questions people ask

What does let do in this example?

Let creates a block scoped remaining binding initialized from the starting count. The subtraction assignment updates that binding to 4. Returning both starting and remaining shows that changing the local number does not rewrite the input object's starting property.

What is the main mistake to avoid with let?

Let allows reassignment, but it does not automatically validate values or prevent negative inventory. Domain rules still need explicit checks when used stock exceeds the starting count.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
