A booking screen already works with Date objects, but its comparison logic needs a number. Extracting the stored instant lets you compare or subtract timestamps without depending on how dates happen to be displayed to visitors.
Think of getTime as an inspection operation on an existing Date. It does not measure how long the method took to run. It does not return the current system time unless the Date was initialized to that instant. In this example the object is created from the fixed pickup timestamp, so repeated runs produce the same number until you change that input.

Follow the value through the operation
Create a Date for the booking timestamp and call getTime on that instance. The result is epoch milliseconds, not the hour of the day. Calling this getter does not change the Date; the example also leaves its source string unchanged.
The relationship to Date.parse is useful. Both routes can produce the epoch millisecond value for a valid timestamp, but they begin at different boundaries. parse consumes a string directly. getTime reads a Date instance that may already have been produced by another part of your application. If a booking object already contains a Date, this getter expresses the operation without converting that object back to text first.
For comparisons, retrieve each Date's number and apply an ordinary numeric comparison. For durations, subtract the start number from the end number. The sign then conveys direction, and the difference conveys elapsed milliseconds. None of those results is a formatted booking label. Keep the Date or original timestamp separately if the interface also needs a date display for the person reviewing the booking.
The easiest unit check is to change 09:30 to 10:30 while preserving the UTC suffix. The new result should be the baseline plus 3600000. A one-second change should add 1000 instead. If your expected difference is off by that factor, inspect the unit used by the API before blaming Date. Finally, test invalid text: the result becomes NaN, and that is a condition to reject before performing arithmetic.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = "2026-10-08T09:30:00Z";
const result = new Date(data).getTime();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
1791451800000
Keep the timestamp unit and UTC convention visible while checking the result. Those are part of this example’s contract, rather than settings inferred from whichever machine opens the page.
Check the boundary before reusing it
An invalid Date returns NaN from getTime. Check validity before calculating a duration, and do not confuse milliseconds with Unix timestamps expressed in seconds.
Move the booking forward one hour and compare the numeric difference. It should increase by 3600000, while the timestamp remains a string in the source panel.
Changed moves the fixed pickup instant forward one UTC day. The extracted number increases by 86400000. That test demonstrates the millisecond unit directly; your separate one-hour manual experiment should increase it by only 3600000.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
Before wiring this number into a booking comparison, ask a teammate to verify the one-hour difference against the baseline. Share the runnable HTML as a link so they can change the timestamp themselves and check the millisecond unit, instead of reviewing a screenshot of one unexplained large number.
