A shipment log stores timestamps as text, but a sorting or duration calculation needs numbers. Converting one known ISO timestamp to epoch milliseconds gives you a reliable numeric starting point without manually splitting its parts.
The numeric result represents the pickup instant as a distance from the epoch, measured in milliseconds. It is not a human-readable date, a local hour, or a count of calendar days. The value looks large because the epoch began in 1970. Large here does not mean inaccurate; the unit and origin simply serve a different purpose from the timestamp displayed in a booking confirmation.

Follow the value through the operation
Date.parse reads the supplied timestamp and returns milliseconds since the Unix epoch. It does not create a Date object or modify the input string. The explicit Z identifies UTC, making this example consistent across browser and server timezone settings.
Using Date.parse makes sense at a boundary where an external timestamp arrives as text and your next operation expects a number. A later calculation can subtract two parsed values to measure elapsed time, or compare them to choose a chronological order. You do not need to split the string and independently calculate years, leap days, or month lengths. Those manual steps introduce avoidable mistakes when a standardized timestamp already carries the required information.
The important failure case is NaN. An invalid timestamp does not throw merely because parse could not interpret it. If you immediately add a duration or compare that result, invalid data can travel through the calculation without producing a useful answer. Number.isNaN is suitable for detecting the failed parse before that happens. Separate this validity check from application rules such as a delivery needing to be in the future.
Try moving the source timestamp forward by one minute. The number should rise by sixty thousand because each minute contains sixty thousand milliseconds. Then compare two strings representing the same instant with different explicit offsets. Their parsed numbers should agree even when their spelling differs. That is why numeric comparison is more dependable than sorting arbitrary timestamp text from different timezone conventions.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = "2026-10-08T09:30:00Z";
const result = Date.parse(data);
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
1791451800000
Keep the timestamp unit and UTC convention visible while checking the result. Those are part of this example’s contract, rather than settings inferred from whichever machine opens the page.
Check the boundary before reusing it
Invalid text returns NaN rather than throwing. Nonstandard date strings can be interpreted differently across engines, so prefer the standardized timestamp form used in this example.
Try another explicit UTC timestamp, then enter an impossible date string. Compare a numeric result with the invalid result before using either in arithmetic.
Changed supplies the same UTC time on October ninth. The returned timestamp should increase by 86400000, exactly one elapsed day in milliseconds. Compare those two numbers before testing an invalid parse that cannot participate in arithmetic.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
When a teammate checks the shipment parser, give them one valid API timestamp and one deliberately invalid string. Send the runnable HTML as a link so they can compare the numeric instant and failed parse directly, then agree on the validation message before that value enters duration arithmetic.
