An event API returns a Unix timestamp in seconds, while JavaScript Date constructors expect milliseconds for numeric input. Converting units before constructing the Date prevents a modern event from appearing near the beginning of nineteen seventy.
The source is a number rather than an ISO string, so its unit is the essential missing context. This API value uses seconds from the Unix epoch. JavaScript's numeric Date constructor uses milliseconds from that same origin. Multiplication by one thousand converts the unit while preserving the intended instant; it is not a timezone adjustment or a date-formatting trick.

Follow the value through the operation
Multiply the API's seconds value by one thousand, then pass that millisecond count to the Date constructor. The ISO output inspects the represented UTC instant. The source number remains in seconds; the conversion belongs to the boundary where it enters JavaScript's Date API.
The initial value maps to October eighth at 09:30 UTC. Increasing it by sixty adds one minute before conversion, so the ISO inspection moves to 09:31. Increasing it by one adds one second. Those small controlled changes let you verify the input contract without relying on a guess based solely on the number's length, which is not a substitute for an API's documented unit.
Passing the seconds value directly to new Date interprets it as milliseconds. The result lands close to the beginning of 1970 instead of the intended modern event. The reverse mistake is equally important: multiplying an already-millisecond timestamp by one thousand moves the instant far away from its real value. Name the boundary variable clearly and convert once where data enters the Date-based code.
Fractional seconds can produce millisecond precision after multiplication, but not every API guarantees that precision or range. This short example uses an ordinary safe number for a readable check. If the upstream contract supplies text, validate and convert it deliberately before applying the unit conversion. The Date constructor should receive the agreed millisecond number, not an unchecked value whose meaning depends on accidental coercion.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = 1791451800;
const result = new Date(data*1000).toISOString();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
"2026-10-08T09:30:00.000Z"
Keep the timestamp unit and UTC convention visible while checking the result. Those are part of this example’s contract, rather than settings inferred from whichever machine opens the page.
Check the boundary before reusing it
Some APIs already return milliseconds. Multiplying those values again creates an incorrect instant, so establish the unit from the API contract instead of guessing from a variable name.
Increase the input by sixty and inspect the output moving forward one minute. Then compare the result without multiplication to recognize the classic seconds-versus-milliseconds mistake.
Changed adds sixty to the input seconds, producing 09:31 UTC rather than 09:30. That one-minute movement is the intended unit check. Compare it with a one-second manual increment to see why the multiplication belongs at the API boundary.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
Confirm the upstream unit before connecting this conversion to the event importer. Share the runnable HTML as a link with the teammate who owns that API contract, and ask them to test a sixty-second increase. The visible one-minute change makes the seconds-to-milliseconds boundary easy to verify together.
