An invoice includes several places that need the same line-item calculation. A named function declaration gives that operation a clear purpose and a reusable entry point, rather than repeating multiplication wherever a preview or total needs it.
The line item costs eighteen per unit and contains four units, so lineTotal returns 72. The function's name describes its job, while its parameters keep the price and quantity separate from any particular invoice record. That makes the same calculation useful for a preview, a subtotal routine, or a second line item without embedding those interface details into the function body.

Follow the value through the operation
Declare lineTotal with price and quantity parameters, then invoke it with the form values. The example calls it before its written declaration within the enclosing function to show declaration initialization. Returning its numeric result keeps the calculation separate from any page-rendering concern.
The example deliberately invokes lineTotal before its declaration appears in the source. Within this enclosing function scope, the declaration is initialized so that call works. That behavior differs from a const variable holding a function expression, whose initialization must execute before the variable can be used. The point is not that earlier calls are always better style, but that the two definitions have distinct initialization rules.
The returned number leaves the calculation through return. Printing the number inside lineTotal would be a separate side effect and would not automatically provide a value to the caller. Here the caller can inspect or display the returned amount without coupling the arithmetic to console output. A reusable calculation should make its inputs and result clear before you add presentation behavior around it.
Change quantity to five and expect ninety. Then call lineTotal with a second price and quantity in the copied snippet, keeping the original function unchanged. If you later add a discount rule, place it in the operation deliberately rather than reproducing a slightly different multiplication in each interface. Keep block-scoped declaration subtleties out of this first example; its calls and definition all belong to one plainly visible function scope.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = {"price":18,"quantity":4};
const result = (()=>{return lineTotal(data.price,data.quantity);function lineTotal(price,quantity){return price*quantity;}})();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
72
The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.
Check the boundary before reusing it
Function declaration behavior depends on scope, especially inside blocks. This example deliberately stays inside one function scope and does not imply that arbitrary block declarations are portable outside their block.
Change the price or quantity and inspect the result. Then call the same named function with another pair in the copied snippet instead of duplicating its multiplication.
Changed uses price nineteen and quantity five, producing ninety-five through the same named function. The call still precedes the declaration inside its enclosing scope. A changed numeric result does not require changing the function’s initialization rule or definition.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
Before reusing the line-item function across an invoice, test a second price and quantity through the same definition. Share this runnable HTML as a link with the person reviewing the calculation. They can check returned amounts directly, then keep formatting and interface updates outside the reusable arithmetic operation.
