A quote builder chooses a calculation and stores it in a variable before using it. A function expression makes that relationship explicit: the calculation is a value that can be assigned, passed along, or replaced in a controlled setup.
The initial calculation returns 72 from a price of eighteen and quantity four. The value assigned to lineTotal is a function, not that completed amount. Calling lineTotal later supplies its parameters and runs its body. This separation is what lets functions be stored and passed as values instead of treating every calculation as an immediate operation written inline.

Follow the value through the operation
Create an ordinary function expression and assign it to lineTotal, then call that variable with the price and quantity. The function's numeric return becomes the example result. Unlike a declaration, this const binding cannot be called before its initialization has executed.
The const declaration initializes the variable at its source position. Moving the call above that initialization would fail because the binding is still in its temporal dead zone. The ordinary function expression's body exists as callable behavior, but that does not make the const variable usable before initialization. This is the useful distinction to remember when comparing the adjacent declaration lesson.
const prevents reassignment of the binding; it does not require the function to be pure or forbid it from reading other values. This particular function only multiplies its supplied parameters, making its behavior easy to test. A larger pricing function could still have side effects or use surrounding state, so those claims should come from its implementation rather than from the fact that it was assigned with const.
Change quantity to five and expect ninety. In the standalone snippet, revise the expression to cap billable quantity at four, then supply five again. The result should stay at 72 under that revised rule. You have changed the behavior stored in the variable during setup, while the invocation still follows the same call structure. That is a concrete way to see a function as a value with a replaceable implementation.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = {"price":18,"quantity":4};
const result = (()=>{const lineTotal=function(price,quantity){return price*quantity;};return lineTotal(data.price,data.quantity);})();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
72
The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.
Check the boundary before reusing it
A const function binding remains in the temporal dead zone before initialization. Assigning a function does not execute its body; the following call is what performs the calculation.
Change the input values, then replace the function body in the copied example with a capped-quantity rule. Keep assignment and invocation as separate visible steps.
Changed uses price nineteen and quantity five, giving ninety-five. The variable still holds the function expression before the invocation occurs. Compare the input and returned value without treating assignment itself as the step that performs the multiplication.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
A replaceable pricing rule is easiest to review with one concrete input that distinguishes the rules. Share the runnable HTML as a link and ask a teammate to compare the ordinary multiplication with your capped-quantity variant. Keep the function assignment visible so they can see which behavior the later call invokes.
