this in JavaScript: read the receiver of a pricing method

Explore this through this working example: read the receiver of a pricing method. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A pricing object owns both its hourly rate and a method that uses that rate. Calling the method through the object shows how this connects the calculation to its receiver instead of requiring the rate as another argument.

The pricing object's rate is forty-five, and its quote method receives three hours. Calling pricing.quote therefore produces 135. The dot-call expression matters: the object to the left of the method access becomes the receiver for this ordinary method invocation. The implementation can read this.rate without the caller passing the rate as another ordinary argument.

Follow the value through the operation

Create the pricing object with a rate property and an ordinary quote method. The expression pricing.quote(hours) invokes it with pricing as the receiver, so this.rate reads that object's rate. The resulting total does not modify either source input or the pricing object's rate.

The method's written location alone does not permanently bind it to pricing. If you extract pricing.quote into a separate variable and invoke that function alone, the receiver relationship from the original dot call is gone. In strict-mode code, this can be undefined; in other circumstances it can differ in ways that still do not provide pricing.rate. Avoid depending on either accidental outcome when passing methods to other code.

One repair is to bind the method to pricing before handing it to another caller. Another is to wrap the later invocation so it explicitly calls pricing.quote. A third design is a function that receives both rate and hours as ordinary parameters and does not use this. Those are different API choices. Understanding the receiver in this small example helps you choose rather than adding bind mechanically to every function.

Set hours to four and verify a total of 180. Then change rate to fifty with three hours, giving 150. In the copied snippet, create a second pricing object and call its own method with the same hours. Each dot call should read its own receiver's rate. The visible calculation is simple enough that an incorrect receiver cannot hide behind unrelated rendering or event-handling logic.

Run read the receiver of a pricing method and inspect the returned value

Run the same calculation in your code

The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.

const data = {"rate":45,"hours":3};
const result = (()=>{const pricing={rate:data.rate,quote(hours){return this.rate*hours;}};return pricing.quote(data.hours);})();
console.log(result);

The original input produces this result:

135

The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.

Check the boundary before reusing it

this is determined by how an ordinary function is invoked, not merely where it was written. Extracting the method and calling it alone loses this receiver relationship.

Change the rate and inspect the total. In the copied snippet, compare the method call with an explicitly bound version before passing it to another function.

Changed gives the pricing object rate forty-six and invokes its method with four hours, returning 184. The receiver relationship stays intact while both numeric inputs change. Inspect a manually edited rate separately before experimenting with a detached method call.

A compact read the receiver of a pricing method example to copy and adapt

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.

Before handing a pricing method to another caller, check the receiver it will actually use. Share this runnable HTML as a link so a teammate can compare the ordinary method call with an explicitly bound version in the copied code. The same hours should still use the intended receiver’s rate.

Questions people ask

What does this do in this example?

Create the pricing object with a rate property and an ordinary quote method. The expression pricing.quote(hours) invokes it with pricing as the receiver, so this.rate reads that object's rate. The resulting total does not modify either source input or the pricing object's rate.

What is the main mistake to avoid with this?

this is determined by how an ordinary function is invoked, not merely where it was written. Extracting the method and calling it alone loses this receiver relationship.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
