destructuring in JavaScript: booking summary fields

Build booking summary fields with destructuring. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A booking card needs two fields from a larger object. Destructuring gives them local names without repeated lookups.

The booking includes guest, room, and date, but its compact card only needs Mina and Studio A. We will read those two named fields into local variables and produce Mina — Studio A without repeating data.guest and data.room.

Booking summary fields: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The source contains three fields while the result contains one display string. Change the date alone and the summary stays the same. Change room and update the preview; the room label in the returned string changes, because the destructuring pattern reads that property.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try booking summary fields and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

The object pattern reads guest and room by name, producing Mina — Studio A.

const {guest, room} = data matches object properties by name, not their position. It declares two variables. The function in the example then combines those values and returns the text; its immediately invoked wrapper allows that small sequence to run as one expression in the lab.

const data = {
  "guest": "Mina",
  "room": "Studio A",
  "date": "2026-10-08"
};
const result = (()=>{const {guest, room} = data;return guest + ' — ' + room;})();
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

"Mina — Studio A"

The date has not disappeared from the source. Choosing two fields for a summary does not remove the fields that other parts of the booking page need.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript destructuring example.

Avoid the common mistake

Missing fields become undefined unless given defaults. Destructuring null or undefined itself throws.

If room is absent, its local value is undefined, and the current concatenation displays that word. A default such as room = "Room not assigned" handles an undefined property. A null property does not trigger that default, and destructuring a null or undefined booking itself throws.

Change one rule, then check it

Remove room and add a default in the destructuring pattern.

Remove room from the sample and observe the current result before adding the default in Edit code. Then test a booking with room set to null. Those two cases are different; choose a deliberate missing-room message rather than hiding both behind a vague fallback.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

A compact booking summary should be understandable even when a field is missing. Share the completed preview and ask someone to try an unassigned room. That check helps you settle both the data access and the language on the card.

Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.

Questions people ask

What does destructuring do in this example?

The object pattern reads guest and room by name, producing Mina — Studio A.

What is the main mistake to avoid with destructuring?

Missing fields become undefined unless given defaults. Destructuring null or undefined itself throws.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
