An import indicator needs to leave its busy state after both successful and failed work. This small state card shows a cleanup flag next to the outcome, demonstrating that finishing housekeeping should not depend on a happy path.
The original failed import produces status Import unavailable with cleanup true. A successful run instead produces ready with the same cleanup flag. That side by side behavior is the point: housekeeping happens after either outcome, rather than being tucked into a success branch where a failure could leave the interface stuck in its busy state.

Build the working example
const data = {"fail":true};
const result = (()=>{const result={status:'checking',cleanup:false};try{if(data?.fail===true)throw new Error('Import unavailable');result.status='ready';}catch(error){result.status=error.message;}finally{result.cleanup=true;}return result;})();
console.log(result);
Try sets ready unless the sample requests a failure. Catch records Import unavailable when the error is thrown. Finally then sets cleanup true in either case, and only after that does the function return the visible result object.
The result object begins with checking and cleanup false. If fail is true, the try block throws an Error. Catch puts its message into status; otherwise the try block sets status ready. Finally then changes cleanup to true before control reaches the return after the whole construct. This sequencing makes the final result easy to inspect. Unlike a return placed inside finally, this cleanup statement does not replace an earlier outcome. The example uses a local flag to make the order observable rather than starting a real import request or claiming to release a real server resource.
The original input returns:
{
"status": "Import unavailable",
"cleanup": true
}

Test the boundary that matters
Change fail to false and verify status ready with cleanup true. Change it back to true and verify Import unavailable with cleanup still true. An empty object takes the success path because the condition specifically checks for literal true. The text true is not the Boolean true and would not trigger this sample failure either. If the real import configuration accepts only Boolean flags, validate that format separately. Finally guarantees this cleanup step after the try catch flow, but it does not turn invalid configuration into a trusted import setting.

Returning or throwing inside finally can replace an earlier result or error. Use it for cleanup, and leave outcome decisions in the appropriate try or catch branch.
If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.
Make one useful change
Toggle fail between true and false and compare both fields. Add a second cleanup flag while preserving the original success or error status.
For the exercise, add another local cleanup field and update it in finally. Both successful and failed cases should return the two cleanup fields in their completed state while preserving the correct status. Do not add a return there just to shorten the function: a return from finally can suppress a previous return or thrown error. Keep the outcome decisions in try or catch and reserve finally for the housekeeping that must follow both.
The two outcomes give an interface teammate a clear busy state review. Share the complete cleanup preview with NOS and ask them to compare success and failure without reading the exception syntax. The same pattern can then guide cleanup in a real importer, where actual request cancellation or resource handling still needs its own appropriate implementation and tests.
For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: finally.
