throw in JavaScript: seat request validation

Explore throw through this working example: seat request validation. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

An event form must reject a zero seat booking even though zero is a valid JSON number. Throwing a specific error makes the business rule explicit, and the surrounding handler converts that exception into a readable validation card.

The supplied zero seat request returns accepted false and Choose 1 to 50 seats. Zero parses successfully as data but violates the booking policy. Throw makes that deliberate rejection explicit, while the surrounding catch turns it into a result the preview can show. The distinction is useful whenever a form can be syntactically correct yet still ask for something the service does not allow.

Build the working example

const data = {"seats":0};
const result = (()=>{try{if(!data||!Number.isInteger(data.seats)||data.seats<1||data.seats>50)throw new Error('Choose 1 to 50 seats');return {accepted:true,seats:data.seats};}catch(error){return {accepted:false,message:error.message};}})();
console.log(result);

The seat count must be an integer between 1 and 50. A failed check throws an Error before any booking result is created. Catch then returns accepted false with its message. A valid count takes the success path and preserves the requested number.

The condition checks that data exists and seats is an integer between 1 and 50. Any failed check throws an Error before the accepted result is created. Execution transfers to catch, where error.message becomes the customer facing explanation. A valid seat count reaches the success return instead. This differs from a JSON.parse error: the input may be perfectly valid JSON and still fail a domain rule. It also differs from returning a validation result directly; throw changes control flow, so the calling path needs an appropriate handler rather than assuming a normal return.

The original input returns:

{
  "accepted": false,
  "message": "Choose 1 to 50 seats"
}

Run the seat request validation operation and compare its source with the output.

Test the boundary that matters

Set seats to 2 and expect accepted true with seats 2. Set it to 1.5 and expect the validation message because a fractional seat is not allowed. An empty object and a zero count should also be rejected. The upper limit of 50 is enforced by the same check, so an excessive request cannot become a successful sample result. The preview does not create a booking, charge a customer, or check real event capacity; it demonstrates the declared local seat request rule only.

Changing the sample reveals the behavior of the seat request validation.

Edit the seat request validation sample and test the cases described above.

Throw can raise any value, but Error objects provide a useful message and stack. A thrown validation error still needs a handler to become a friendly interface.

If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.

Make one useful change

Change seats to 2 and then to 1.5. Confirm the accepted flag follows the integer rule, and adjust the minimum only if your booking policy changes.

For the exercise, test 2 and 1.5 before changing the minimum. The first should succeed and the second should fail. If you choose a minimum of 2 for a group booking policy, update the message as well as the comparison so the result accurately explains the accepted range. Prefer throwing Error objects instead of unrelated strings when an exception is appropriate, and keep exception handling close enough that the interface can recover with a useful message.

The seat rule is ready for the person defining booking policy to review. Share the complete validation preview through NOS and ask them to try the minimum, a fractional value, and an excessive request. Once that policy is agreed, enforce it again in the trusted booking service. The local thrown error helps explain the rule but cannot authorize or reserve actual places.

For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: throw.

Questions people ask

What does throw do in this example?

The seat count must be an integer between 1 and 50. A failed check throws an Error before any booking result is created. Catch then returns accepted false with its message. A valid count takes the success path and preserves the requested number.

What is the main mistake to avoid with throw?

Throw can raise any value, but Error objects provide a useful message and stack. A thrown validation error still needs a handler to become a friendly interface.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
