Math.min in JavaScript: cheapest supplier quote

Build cheapest supplier quote with Math.min. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Three suppliers quote 28, 12, and 19 for the same item. A comparison page can show all three quotes while highlighting the cheapest amount at the top. The summary should come from the data rather than a hand-edited label.

Math.min returns the smallest supplied number. With these quotes, it returns 12. The list remains unchanged, which lets the reader inspect the evidence behind the cheapest-price summary.

An editable cheapest supplier quote prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Find the minimum without sorting the quotes

Math.min expects individual arguments. The spread syntax in Math.min(...data) supplies the array's three entries as separate numbers, just like Math.min(28, 12, 19).

The returned value is the amount 12, not the array position or the supplier's identity. If you need the winning supplier, preserve a list of supplier records and find the record associated with the minimum, including a rule for ties.

The method does not sort or alter the quotes. Keeping the detail list alongside the result is helpful: the summary makes comparison quick, and the original values show why that summary is correct.

const data = [
  28,
  12,
  19
];
const result = Math.min(...data);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

12

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Math.min, with editable input and visible output.

An empty list has no cheapest quote

An empty spread supplies no arguments. Math.min then returns Infinity, not zero or null. A quote interface should treat an empty list as "No quotes available" before asking for its minimum.

Passing a multi-item array directly is also not a substitute for spread. Math.min(data) does not scan the array entries as separate arguments and can produce NaN after conversion. Make the intended argument list explicit.

Validate that the quotes use the same currency and pricing basis. A lower amount is not a meaningful comparison if one excludes delivery or uses a different unit. The JavaScript method only compares numbers.

Add a lower quote and handle ties

Add a quote of 9 and check that the summary updates without rearranging the list. Then try an empty array and confirm that Infinity is not presented as a real supplier quote.

For a practical extension, use objects with supplier names and amounts. Show all tied suppliers when their amounts share the minimum. This makes the card more useful than assuming there is always one winner or trying to infer a supplier name from the numeric result.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.
The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Math.min() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

A supplier summary benefits from a working comparison that lets someone change the quotes. Share the complete HTML using HTML to link through NOS so a teammate can test the empty and tied cases. Keep the figures fictional, and make the currency and quote assumptions visible in the page.

Questions people ask

What does Math.min do in this example?

min returns the smallest argument. Spreading this short array supplies the three prices individually.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Math.min?

An empty argument list gives Infinity. Directly passing the array does not scan its entries.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
