Math.pow in JavaScript: repeated growth factors

Build repeated growth factors with Math.pow. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A planning sketch applies a 1.1 multiplier three times. Writing the multiplication out works, but the pattern becomes awkward as the number of periods changes.

Math.pow raises the base to the exponent. This example returns about 1.331: the combined factor from three successive 10% increases. It shows a factor, not a promised real-world outcome, and keeps the base and period count visible beside it.

An editable repeated growth factors prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Raise the multiplier to the period count

The two arguments are base and exponent. Math.pow(data.base, data.exponent) evaluates 1.1 raised to 3, equivalent here to 1.1 multiplied by itself three times.

The exponentiation operator, 1.1 ** 3, expresses the same basic operation for this numeric example. Choose the form that makes your formula readable. An exponent of zero produces 1 for an ordinary nonzero base, which is useful for representing the starting period before any multiplication.

To estimate an ending amount, multiply an initial amount by the factor. Keep the factor and the amount labeled separately: 1.331 is not automatically a currency amount or a percentage.

const data = {
  "base": 1.1,
  "exponent": 3
};
const result = Math.pow(data.base, data.exponent);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

1.3310000000000004

Format floating-point output separately

The sample displays 1.3310000000000004. That tail comes from binary floating-point representation, not from an extra hidden growth period. Format a separate display string if a planning card should show 1.331, while preserving the numeric result for subsequent arithmetic.

A negative base with a fractional exponent can produce NaN in JavaScript's real-number calculation. A planning interface should validate its permitted domain before displaying a factor.

A repeated multiplier also assumes the same factor each period. If each period has a different change, multiply those actual factors instead; raising one average-looking value to a power is a different model.

Test the starting and first periods

Change the exponent from 3 to 0 and then to 1. These boundary cases should return 1 and 1.1. Next, keep three periods but use a base of 0.9 to model repeated decreases.

For an extension, add an initial amount and show both the raw factor and a formatted ending estimate. Label the fixed-rate assumption so the reader understands what the calculation demonstrates and what changing conditions would require.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.
The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Math.pow() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

A planning example is easier to review when the assumptions can be changed directly. Share the complete HTML with HTML to link through NOS so someone can try a different base or period count. Use sample figures and keep the fixed-multiplier assumption visible rather than presenting this as financial forecasting advice.

Questions people ask

What does Math.pow do in this example?

pow raises 1.1 to power 3, producing approximately 1.331.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Math.pow?

Binary floating-point can expose extra digits. Format the display separately from the calculation.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
