Number.isSafeInteger in JavaScript: large identifier safety

Build large identifier safety with Number.isSafeInteger. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A record identifier is 9007199254740991. JavaScript can represent this integer safely, but nearby larger identifiers can become indistinguishable when treated as ordinary numbers.

Number.isSafeInteger checks both whole-number status and the safe numeric range. The sample returns true at the upper safe boundary. For long external identifiers, the more useful decision may be to keep the original text instead of converting it to a number at all.

Check the safe integer boundary

Safe integers range from -9007199254740991 through 9007199254740991, inclusive. Number.isSafeInteger(data) returns true for the original upper-bound value. The same boundary is available as Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER.

The method returns false for fractions, non-number values, and integers beyond that safe range. This is stricter than Number.isInteger, which only checks whether the represented value is an integer.

Why safe matters: ordinary JavaScript numbers use floating-point representation. Beyond the safe range, consecutive mathematical integers may not remain distinguishable. An apparently whole numeric value can therefore already have lost the exact identifier supplied by another system.

const data = 9007199254740991;
const result = Number.isSafeInteger(data);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

true

Validation cannot recover digits already lost

This check cannot recover digits lost during conversion. If a long identifier is parsed into a Number before validation, its represented value may already differ from the original text. Keep the string through import when exact identifier matching is required.

An identifier is often a label rather than an amount. A string preserves leading zeros and does not invite arithmetic. BigInt is another option for genuine large-integer calculations, but it has different interoperability and JSON-serialization considerations.

Passing this check does not validate the identifier's meaning or authorization. It only tells you about the numeric value's integer status and representational range.

Preserve long identifiers as text

Increase the sample by one to 9007199254740992 and confirm the check becomes false. Then compare Number.isInteger for that same value: it can still be an integer without being safe.

For an import extension, accept the identifier as a quoted JSON string and display it unchanged. Only convert fields that actually need numerical operations. This prevents a record viewer from quietly damaging long IDs or stripping meaningful leading zeros.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Number.isSafeInteger() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

An identifier-safety example should preserve the original text while demonstrating the boundary. Share the complete HTML with HTML to link through NOS so another developer can inspect it. Use invented identifiers, and avoid presenting numeric safety as permission to expose real account or transaction IDs.

Questions people ask

What does Number.isSafeInteger do in this example?

isSafeInteger accepts integers between negative 9007199254740991 and positive 9007199254740991, inclusive.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Number.isSafeInteger?

Oversized values may lose information during Number conversion before this check. Keep long identifiers as strings or use BigInt when appropriate.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
