Number.isInteger in JavaScript: whole-ticket validation

Build whole-ticket validation with Number.isInteger. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A ticket quantity is 3.5. That may be a valid number, but it cannot describe a whole-ticket order. The first question is whether the quantity is an integer, followed by whether it is in the allowed range.

Number.isInteger checks for a numeric whole value. The sample returns false for 3.5. It does not round that quantity or decide whether a negative whole number would be acceptable for the ticket form.

An editable whole-ticket validation prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Check whole-number status without conversion

Number.isInteger(data) returns true when the input is a number with no fractional component. The original 3.5 returns false, while 3 returns true. A literal such as 3.0 is the same numeric value as 3 and also passes.

The method does not convert strings. The string "3" returns false even though it looks like a whole quantity. If your field begins as text, handle conversion deliberately and keep blank-input checks separate.

The result is a boolean, and the original quantity remains unchanged. This makes it suitable for a validation condition rather than a transformation that silently changes what someone requested.

const data = 3.5;
const result = Number.isInteger(data);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

false

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Number.isInteger, with editable input and visible output.

Whole numbers can still be invalid quantities

Zero and negative integers pass the integer check. Infinity and NaN do not. A ticket form therefore needs additional rules such as quantity greater than zero and quantity no larger than the available limit.

Integer does not mean safe integer. Large JavaScript numbers can have no fractional part while still being outside the reliably distinguishable integer range. Use Number.isSafeInteger if that distinction matters for the quantity.

Also remember that floating-point representation determines the actual value being tested. The method checks the represented number, not the exact decimal characters a person originally typed. Keep the source text when precise input-format validation matters.

Add a positive quantity rule

Try 3, 3.5, 0, -2, and "3". Label each result as an integer check, then separately decide which values the ticket form should accept.

In a copied starter, combine the integer check with a positive range condition. Show a different message for a fractional quantity and an out-of-range whole quantity. Specific feedback helps the reader correct the field instead of guessing what a generic invalid label means.

The MDN reference for Number.isInteger() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

A ticket quantity example is worth reviewing with fractional, zero, and negative cases. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link with NOS so someone can test the rule. It is a browser-side validation demonstration, not a booking system or a replacement for validating an order on the server.

Questions people ask

What does Number.isInteger do in this example?

isInteger returns false for 3.5 and true for a numeric whole value such as 3.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Number.isInteger?

It does not enforce a positive quantity or a safe range. Add application-specific bounds.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
