Number.toPrecision in JavaScript: significant-digit measurements

Build significant-digit measurements with Number.toPrecision. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A measurement reads 123.456, but its label should show four significant digits. Asking for four decimal places would show a different amount of detail, especially when another measurement is much smaller.

Number.toPrecision controls significant digits, not fixed decimal places. The example returns the string "123.5". The quotes in the output matter: this is a formatted display value, while the original number remains available for calculations.

Format significant digits as a display string

Calling data.toPrecision(4) formats the number using four significant digits. Here, the digits 1, 2, 3, and 5 communicate the rounded representation of 123.456.

Leading zeros before the first significant digit do not consume the precision. For example, 0.00123456 with precision 4 becomes "0.001235". That makes significant-digit formatting useful when measurements span different scales.

The method returns a string and does not change data. Keep arithmetic on the original numeric value, and use the formatted string where a label is expected. Converting the label back into a number discards formatting details such as trailing zeros.

const data = 123.456;
const result = data.toPrecision(4);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

"123.5"

Significant digits are not decimal places

toPrecision and toFixed answer different questions. toFixed(4) requests four places after the decimal point; toPrecision(4) requests four significant digits across the value. They are not interchangeable measurement-label rules.

Very small or large numbers can appear in exponential notation. That is valid output, so decide whether your audience understands it before dropping the string into a simple card. Supplying precision outside the accepted range of 1 through 100 throws a RangeError.

Formatting a value with a certain precision does not establish its scientific accuracy. Use a precision justified by your measurement or teaching example rather than implying that extra digits are verified observations.

Compare measurements at different scales

Compare 123.456, 0.00123456, and 123456 with the same precision. Notice how the format adapts and when scientific notation appears. Then compare toFixed(4) in a copied starter.

For a useful measurement card, show a short formatted label and keep the raw number in an inspection panel. If users choose the precision, validate that control before calling the method and label it "significant digits" so they do not expect decimal places.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Number.prototype.toPrecision() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

A measurement-format review should include values at different scales. Share the complete HTML using HTML to link on NOS so someone can inspect the strings and raw values together. Keep the samples labeled as formatting examples; the page does not certify measurement accuracy or synchronize records.

Questions people ask

What does Number.toPrecision do in this example?

toPrecision returns a string with four significant digits, 123.5.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Number.toPrecision?

Very small or large values may use exponential notation. Precision and fixed decimal places are different.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
