An imported weight arrives as "12.5 kg". The report needs the leading decimal amount, while the unit still belongs in a separate label. A strict conversion of the entire string cannot treat the letters as part of a number.
Number.parseFloat reads a valid numeric prefix. For this sample, it returns 12.5 and leaves the original text unchanged. That is useful for a controlled import format, but its willingness to ignore trailing text deserves attention.

Read the numeric prefix and retain the original text
Number.parseFloat(data) reads the beginning of the string as a decimal number. Leading whitespace is ignored. Once the valid numeric prefix ends, the parser stops, so the trailing space and kg do not prevent this input from producing 12.5.
The returned value is a number. It does not contain the unit, and it does not prove that the ignored suffix was actually kg. Preserve or validate the unit separately if the imported records can use different measurement systems.
Number.parseFloat and the global parseFloat have the same functionality. The Number prefix organizes the operation under that namespace; it does not make parsing stricter.
const data = "12.5 kg";
const result = Number.parseFloat(data);
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
12.5

Trailing text and decimal commas need a rule
The string "12.5 nonsense" also returns 12.5. That can be convenient for tolerant parsing but wrong for a form that requires the whole entry to match a known pattern. A successful prefix parse is not complete validation.
A decimal comma is not treated as a decimal point. "12,5 kg" parses as 12, stopping at the comma. Agree on an import format or use a deliberate locale-aware rule before conversion.
If no numeric prefix is available, the result is NaN. Check that result and explain the invalid record; do not quietly substitute zero, which would make a bad measurement look like a real zero weight.
Test the actual import formats
Try "12.5 kg", "12,5 kg", and "kg 12.5". The differing results reveal the prefix rule more clearly than several clean decimal examples. Add leading spaces and confirm they do not change the successful parse.
For a practical extension, accept only a known amount-and-unit format, show the parsed amount beside the original label, and reject unsupported units. This prevents a numeric result from hiding a mismatched unit or an incorrectly interpreted locale.

The MDN reference for Number.parseFloat() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.
For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.
Share a working explanation
An import rule is easier to review with the original strings visible beside parsed amounts. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link using NOS so someone can test troublesome records. Use sample measurements; the page demonstrates parsing in the browser and does not update a shared inventory or measurement database.
