Number.parseInt in JavaScript: imported seat count

Build imported seat count with Number.parseInt. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A rough import has a leading count followed by a unit. Prefix parsing is useful when that permissive rule is intentional.

The imported value is the text "42 seats", but the next step needs the number 42. We will parse its leading integer in base ten. The important decision is whether your import accepts that trailing unit, because parseInt intentionally stops before it.

Imported seat count: the original sample and its calculated result.
Imported seat count: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result is 42, while the source remains "42 seats". Change the input to "18 seats" and the returned count becomes 18. Now try "seats 42": it has no leading integer, so the parser returns NaN rather than finding a number anywhere in the text.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try imported seat count and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

parseInt reads an integer prefix using radix ten, stops at the remaining text, and returns 42.

Number.parseInt(data, 10) reads from the beginning after ignoring leading whitespace. The 10 explicitly selects decimal digits. Once parsing encounters a character that does not belong to that integer, it stops. The Number.parseInt method has the same parsing behavior as the global parseInt function.

const data = "42 seats";
const result = Number.parseInt(data, 10);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

42

The parser returns a number, not a cleaned string. A count display can use that value, but the original import still needs a policy for invalid or unexpected text.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript number parseInt example.

Avoid the common mistake

It is not strict validation. 42wrong also returns 42; a leading word gives NaN.

"42wrong" also parses as 42, and "42.9" parses as 42. That makes this a prefix parser rather than strict count validation. Test Number.isNaN(result) before using a failed parse, and apply a separate whole-input rule when trailing characters must cause rejection.

Change one rule, then check it

Compare 42 seats and seats 42, then choose an import rejection policy.

An empty string produces NaN. Compare "42 seats", "seats 42", and "-2 seats", then decide which your import should accept. A negative result can parse successfully while still being an invalid seat count. Parsing and application validation answer different questions.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Before settling an import policy, let someone try the awkward examples in this working parser. The returned value makes its permissive behavior clear. Share fictional inputs while deciding which cases should be accepted, rejected, or sent back for correction.

Questions people ask

What does Number.parseInt do in this example?

parseInt reads an integer prefix using radix ten, stops at the remaining text, and returns 42.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Number.parseInt?

It is not strict validation. 42wrong also returns 42; a leading word gives NaN.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
