Object.create in JavaScript: shared preference defaults

Build shared preference defaults with Object.create. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Several views can share comfortable spacing by default while choosing their own theme. Copying all defaults into every view hides which settings were overridden and which are still inherited.

Object.create builds an object that inherits from the supplied defaults. This example sets an own dark theme, reads inherited comfortable density, and lists only theme among the new object's own keys. The three returned fields show that distinction explicitly.

An editable shared preference defaults prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Separate own overrides from inherited defaults

Object.create(data) makes a new object whose prototype is data. Assigning settings.theme = 'dark' adds an own field that shadows the inherited light theme. Reading settings.density finds no own value, so JavaScript looks through the prototype and obtains comfortable.

Object.keys(settings) returns only theme. It does not list inherited density. That does not mean density is inaccessible; it means density belongs to the prototype rather than the new object's own field set.

The expression returns a small summary so both inherited and own behavior are visible in JSON. Serializing settings directly would omit density, which could make a casual reader mistake inheritance for a complete copy.

const data = {
  "theme": "light",
  "density": "comfortable"
};
const result = (()=>{const settings=Object.create(data);settings.theme='dark';return {ownTheme:settings.theme,inheritedDensity:settings.density,ownKeys:Object.keys(settings)};})();
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

{
  "ownTheme": "dark",
  "inheritedDensity": "comfortable",
  "ownKeys": [
    "theme"
  ]
}

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Object.create, with editable input and visible output.

Inheritance is not a standalone copy

Inheritance is not merging. The new object reads defaults through its prototype, so a later change to a default can affect an inherited value. An explicit own override stops that particular read from reaching the default.

JSON serialization and ordinary own-key lists do not preserve this prototype relationship. If you need a standalone settings payload containing all effective choices, construct that payload deliberately rather than assuming JSON will expand inherited values.

Use a trusted object as the prototype. Also distinguish this example from Object.create(null), which creates an object without Object.prototype; useful in some dictionary designs, but a different goal from shared defaults.

Override a default, then remove the override

Add settings.density = 'compact' in a copied starter. Density should now appear in ownKeys, and the returned inheritedDensity label would need renaming because that value is now an own override.

Delete the density override and the comfortable default becomes visible again. Then change the default density itself and observe the inherited result. These steps teach the lookup relationship more clearly than adding unrelated properties to the JSON editor.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.
The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Object.create() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

A teammate deciding between copied options and inherited defaults needs to see this lookup behavior. Share the complete comparison using HTML to link through NOS. The browser example can demonstrate inheritance without suggesting that shared pages synchronize their settings or maintain a common database.

Questions people ask

What does Object.create do in this example?

create uses data as the prototype. An own dark theme overrides light, while density is inherited.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.create?

keys lists only own fields, so inherited density is absent. Avoid untrusted prototype changes.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
