Object.defineProperty in JavaScript: read-only workshop reference

Build read-only workshop reference with Object.defineProperty. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A workshop draft needs an editable title and a reference that stays fixed. Making the entire object read-only would prevent useful title edits; ordinary assignment would leave the reference writable.

Object.defineProperty lets you set the rules for one property. The example adds reference: "WS-104" while keeping title as "Workshop". The reference appears in the preview because enumerable is explicitly true, but writable and configurable are explicitly false.

An editable read-only workshop reference prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Give one field explicit property rules

The three arguments identify the object, the property name, and a descriptor. The value field supplies WS-104. Writable controls whether assignment can replace that value; configurable controls whether the property can be removed or reconfigured; enumerable controls inclusion in ordinary key enumeration.

Object.defineProperty returns the same object it modifies. The surrounding expression returns data so the preview shows both title and the new reference. Unlike the other fields parsed from JSON, this reference now has deliberately restricted descriptor flags.

Title remains writable. Defining one read-only reference does not freeze the object or prevent new unrelated fields from being added.

const data = {
  "title": "Workshop"
};
const result = (Object.defineProperty(data, 'reference', {value: 'WS-104', enumerable: true, writable: false, configurable: false}), data);
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

{
  "title": "Workshop",
  "reference": "WS-104"
}

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Object.defineProperty, with editable input and visible output.

Descriptor defaults differ from ordinary assignment

When you define a new property with this method, omitted writable, enumerable, and configurable flags default to false. That differs from ordinary assignment, which creates a normal writable, enumerable, configurable property.

Forgetting enumerable can make a newly defined value disappear from JSON output even though it exists. Forgetting writable can make an expected edit fail. Specify the flags when their behavior matters instead of relying on a guess about defaults.

In strict mode, attempting to assign a different reference throws a TypeError. A fixed client-side reference is useful for demonstrating object rules, but it is not a secure order identifier or a server-enforced permission.

Keep title editable and reference fixed

Copy the starter, change title after the descriptor is applied, and show the updated object. Then attempt to change reference inside a strict-mode try/catch and display the caught error.

For a second comparison, make enumerable false in a fresh copy of the example. The reference still exists but drops out of JSON output. Use a new object for this test: configurable: false intentionally prevents you from later flipping this particular property's enumerable flag.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Object.defineProperty() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Share a working explanation

The valuable review is whether title remains editable while reference follows its separate rules. Share the complete HTML using HTML to link through NOS so someone can examine both behaviors. Keep the workshop reference fictional; a browser property descriptor does not replace backend authorization.

Questions people ask

What does Object.defineProperty do in this example?

defineProperty adds a read-only reference and makes it enumerable for the preview.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.defineProperty?

Descriptor flags default to false when omitted. Specify writable, enumerable, and configurable deliberately.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
