Object.entries in JavaScript: labeled department budget rows

Build labeled department budget rows with Object.entries. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A budget table needs labels and amounts together. Extracting just keys or values would require another lookup.

The budget object associates design with 1200, research with 800, and support with 500. A useful budget row needs both parts together. We will turn those named properties into three records that retain each department and its amount.

Labeled department budget rows: the original sample and its calculated result.
Labeled department budget rows: the original sample and its calculated result.

Try the working result

The result shows a department field beside its budget in every row. Change research to 950 and update the preview; the research record changes while its label remains research. This avoids maintaining a separate array of labels that can drift away from the amounts.

Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Try labeled department budget rows and compare the source with the returned value.

Follow the code

Object.entries supplies key-value pairs. Destructuring each pair creates a labeled row.

Object.entries first produces pairs such as ["design", 1200]. In the map callback, [department, budget] destructures each pair into two local names. Returning {department, budget} turns the pair into a record that is straightforward to render as a labeled card or table row.

const data = {
  "design": 1200,
  "research": 800,
  "support": 500
};
const result = Object.entries(data).map(([department, budget]) => ({department, budget}));
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

[
  {
    "department": "design",
    "budget": 1200
  },
  {
    "department": "research",
    "budget": 800
  },
  {
    "department": "support",
    "budget": 500
  }
]

The two operations have different jobs: entries extracts the pairs; map gives each pair the named fields used by this preview. Keep that distinction when adapting the code.

The starter separates the input, operation, and returned result.

Take the small version apart

The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

A copyable HTML starter for this javascript object entries example.

Avoid the common mistake

It excludes inherited, non-enumerable, and symbol-keyed properties.

Only own enumerable string-keyed properties appear. Inherited, non-enumerable, and symbol-keyed properties are excluded. Numeric-looking object keys also follow JavaScript property-ordering rules, so do not treat an arbitrary object as a manually ordered agenda without deciding its order explicitly.

Change one rule, then check it

Add a department and check that its label remains paired with its amount.

An empty budget object returns []. Add "operations": 300 and expect a fourth labeled row. Then change a department name without changing its amount: the record should retain that pairing. If your interface needs a grand total, calculate it separately from these display records.

Compare the Changed data preset with the original before making your own edit.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.

Put the example in someone else's hands

Budget reviewers need to see labels and amounts together. A shared prototype lets them edit a fictional department and confirm its row still makes sense. It is a useful check of the display model before you connect real financial data.

Questions people ask

What does Object.entries do in this example?

Object.entries supplies key-value pairs. Destructuring each pair creates a labeled row.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.entries?

It excludes inherited, non-enumerable, and symbol-keyed properties.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
