Object.seal in JavaScript: fixed settings shape

Build fixed settings shape with Object.seal. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

Your settings object has a known shape: theme and density. Users should be able to change those values, but a typo such as densitty should not silently become a new setting.

Object.seal fixes the set of own properties while leaving writable values editable. The example seals the settings and returns true from Object.isSealed. That means the object is sealed; it does not mean that dark mode has become impossible to select.

An editable fixed settings shape prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Fix the fields without freezing their values

The operation acts on data itself and returns the same object. Sealing prevents extensions and makes its existing own properties non-configurable. With this JSON input, theme and density begin as ordinary writable properties, and sealing leaves them writable.

You can still change theme from light to dark. You cannot add language as a new own property, remove theme, or change these properties' configurability. Think of the field list as fixed while each existing value retains its own write rule.

The preview reports the seal status instead of returning a new settings object. The source values remain light and comfortable because this expression checks protection without performing a value edit.

const data = {
  "theme": "light",
  "density": "comfortable"
};
const result = Object.isSealed(Object.seal(data));
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

true

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Object.seal, with editable input and visible output.

Sealed does not mean read-only

Seal and freeze serve different purposes. Freeze also makes own data properties non-writable; seal does not. Labeling sealed settings as read-only would give the reader the wrong mental model.

A failed addition or deletion can behave differently in strict and non-strict code. Run an explicit strict-mode test when you need to catch mistakes rather than merely observe the final object.

Nested objects are not sealed recursively. If a setting contains a nested object, that object still has its own descriptor and extension rules. Finally, sealing does not verify allowed themes or spacing values: light, dark, and a nonsense string are all assignments unless you validate them.

Compare editing, adding, and deleting

In a copied starter, seal the original settings, change theme, and inspect the new value. Next, try adding language and deleting density. These three actions separate value edits from shape edits.

If your application also needs read-only settings, compare the same object after Object.freeze. If it only needs known keys, consider validating incoming keys before construction; seal catches later additions but does not remove a misspelled key that was already present when you sealed the object.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Object.seal() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

Questions people ask

What does Object.seal do in this example?

seal prevents adding or deleting own properties and makes them non-configurable. Existing writable values can still change.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.seal?

Sealing is not freezing. Do not label sealed settings read-only when their fields remain writable.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
