Object.hasOwn in JavaScript: explicit zero-discount check

Build explicit zero-discount check with Object.hasOwn. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A cart contains discount: 0. That can mean the discount was deliberately set to zero, which is different from a cart where nobody supplied a discount at all. A truthiness check treats both situations alike and loses that distinction.

Object.hasOwn checks whether the discount field exists directly on the cart. With the sample input, it returns true even though the value is zero. This is a presence check, not an opinion about whether zero is a useful discount.

An editable explicit zero-discount check prototype. The result is calculated in your browser, not a static mockup.

Check the field rather than its truthiness

Pass the object first and the property name second. Object.hasOwn(data, 'discount') asks about the cart's own field, without looking through its prototype for inherited properties.

The method returns a boolean. It does not return the discount amount or change the cart. In the original sample, subtotal stays 36 and discount stays 0. Your next step can then decide how to interpret that explicit zero.

An own property whose value is null or undefined also counts as present. That is why property presence and value validation deserve separate lines in a real form: the caller may have supplied a field without supplying an acceptable amount.

const data = {
  "discount": 0,
  "subtotal": 36
};
const result = Object.hasOwn(data, 'discount');
console.log(result);

The original sample returns:

true

A complete, copyable HTML starter for Object.hasOwn, with editable input and visible output.

Presence and validity are different checks

Checking data.discount in an if statement answers a different question: whether that value is truthy. Zero, false, and an empty string can all be legitimate supplied values, yet all fail that test.

The in operator also checks inherited properties. That can be useful, but it is not the same question as whether this cart explicitly provided a discount. Object.hasOwn is also safe to use when an object has no inherited hasOwnProperty method or has a field with that name.

After confirming presence, validate the amount according to your application. A present negative discount, string, or object does not become acceptable because this boolean says true.

Compare missing, zero, and null

Delete the discount entry from the JSON, leaving only subtotal, and run again. The result changes to false. Restore discount with zero and it returns true; change zero to null and it remains true.

Write the three cases down as missing, explicitly zero, and explicitly empty. Decide which ones your checkout should accept before writing its default-value logic. JSON cannot contain undefined, so use the copied code if you want to test that particular JavaScript value.

The same example with the Changed data preset; compare it with the original result before editing the operation.

The MDN reference for Object.hasOwn() documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.

For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.

A reviewer can understand the checkout rule faster by trying these three carts than by reading a vague validation note. Copy the HTML example into HTML to link and share it with NOS. It demonstrates a field check using sample data, without pretending to apply a discount to a live order.

Questions people ask

What does Object.hasOwn do in this example?

hasOwn checks whether discount is an own property regardless of its value.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Object.hasOwn?

Presence is not validity. Validate the supplied discount amount separately.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
