A booking message includes a seat count alongside ordinary text. You need the matched fragment and its position, not merely a yes-or-no result, so a small extraction can show precisely where the count came from.
The initial message contains seats: 24 after the word Reserved. The result therefore includes that matched fragment, a start index of nine, and a count group containing the string 24. Exposing those three properties makes the source of the extraction visible. A boolean alone would tell you the pattern matched without showing which text your booking logic was about to trust.

Follow the value through the operation
Call exec with a fixed pattern containing a named count group. A successful result is an array with additional metadata; this example exposes the complete matched fragment, start index, and groups as a plain object so the inspector shows those properties clearly.
exec actually returns an array with extra properties, rather than the plain object shown by the panel. The example maps the array's complete match, index, and named groups into an object because ordinary array JSON output would omit its extra metadata. That mapping is an inspection step, not a claim that exec's return type changed. A failure takes the other branch and returns null directly.
The count is still text. Convert it deliberately if the next operation needs a seat number, then apply the booking's permitted range. A regex can find a digit sequence without establishing that the quantity is realistic, available, or safe to accept. This fixed pattern also makes assumptions about the message's exact phrase and casing; a structured API field is preferable when the upstream system can provide one.
Try adding Hello before Reserved and observe the match index increasing while the captured count stays the same. Change twenty-four to thirty and the group changes accordingly. Remove seats: entirely and the result becomes null. Check that condition before reading a group, so an ordinary nonmatching message cannot turn an extraction helper into an exception in your booking flow.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = "Reserved seats: 24 for Friday";
const result = (()=>{const match=/seats: (?<count>[0-9]+)/.exec(data);return match?{match:match[0],index:match.index,groups:match.groups}:null;})();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
{
"match": "seats: 24",
"index": 9,
"groups": {
"count": "24"
}
}
The expression stays fixed while the message changes. Incoming text is data; this example neither evaluates it as code nor lets it redefine an unrestricted regular expression.
Check the boundary before reusing it
No match returns null. The captured count is text rather than a number, so convert and validate it before arithmetic; global expressions also maintain search position between calls.
Change the seat count and add a word before the message. Inspect both the captured digits and the increased start index, then remove the matching phrase.
Changed appends unrelated text after the message. The same seats fragment still matches at index nine, with count 24. Extraction does not require the whole message to match, so unchanged output is expected when the matching phrase stays intact.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
Before turning the captured count into a booking quantity, ask a teammate to try a nonmatching message as well as a valid one. Share the runnable HTML as a link so they can inspect the captured text and null branch directly, then agree on the numeric validation that should follow extraction.
