RegExp.global in JavaScript: tell one match from all ticket matches

Explore RegExp.global through this working example: tell one match from all ticket matches. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A dashboard sometimes needs the first ticket reference and sometimes a list of every reference in a message. Comparing expressions with and without global matching makes that choice concrete instead of treating g as a mysterious required suffix.

The first matching fragment is SUP-2048, and the full match list also contains SUP-4096. singleGlobal is false, while allGlobal is true. Showing the configuration and resulting searches together makes it clear that global describes the expression's enabled flag, not whether the particular message happened to contain multiple tickets.

Follow the value through the operation

Build two fixed patterns with the same ticket rule and inspect their global properties. The non-global match exposes its first matched text, while the global match returns all matched text entries. The boolean property describes configuration; the arrays and strings come from match.

Two matching operations return different shapes here. Without g, String.match returns a result array with the first full match and any captured groups; the example selects its first element for a simple comparison. With g, the method returns the complete matched fragments as a list. The displayed single and all fields are therefore a deliberate application-level view, not an assertion that both calls return the same kind of metadata.

The global property is read only. To change matching behavior, create an expression with the desired flags rather than assigning to that property. Global expressions can also maintain lastIndex during exec or test calls, so enabling g affects more than the number of fragments visible in this particular String.match example. Use the related cursor lesson when you need to understand repeated manual searches.

Add a third uppercase reference to the end of the message. The single field should still show SUP-2048, while the all field gains the new text. Next remove every reference. single becomes null and all becomes an empty array under this example's wrappers. Both global booleans keep their original values, confirming that configuration belongs to each expression rather than to its latest result.

Run tell one match from all ticket matches and inspect the returned value

Run the same calculation in your code

The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.

const data = "SUP-2048 then SUP-4096";
const result = (()=>{const single=/SUP-[0-9]{4}/;const all=/SUP-[0-9]{4}/g;return {singleGlobal:single.global,allGlobal:all.global,single:data.match(single)?.[0]??null,all:data.match(all)||[]};})();
console.log(result);

The original input produces this result:

{
  "singleGlobal": false,
  "allGlobal": true,
  "single": "SUP-2048",
  "all": [
    "SUP-2048",
    "SUP-4096"
  ]
}

The expression stays fixed while the message changes. Incoming text is data; this example neither evaluates it as code nor lets it redefine an unrestricted regular expression.

Check the boundary before reusing it

global is a read-only indication of the g flag, not a switch you toggle by assigning true. Global matching also changes the structure returned by String.match.

Add a third reference to the message. Confirm that the first result stays the same while the global list gains another entry, then test text with no references.

Changed adds unrelated trailing text, leaving the first ticket and full ticket list unchanged. The global booleans also remain fixed. Add a third valid reference manually to test a meaningful difference between the first-match and all-match views.

A second input lets you compare the RegExp.global calculation

A compact tell one match from all ticket matches example to copy and adapt

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.

Decide whether the dashboard needs the first ticket or every ticket before choosing its matcher. Share the runnable HTML as a link with the person reviewing that behavior. They can add another reference and compare both results, which is more informative than simply describing the pattern as global.

Questions people ask

What does RegExp.global do in this example?

Build two fixed patterns with the same ticket rule and inspect their global properties. The non-global match exposes its first matched text, while the global match returns all matched text entries. The boolean property describes configuration; the arrays and strings come from match.

What is the main mistake to avoid with RegExp.global?

global is a read-only indication of the g flag, not a switch you toggle by assigning true. Global matching also changes the structure returned by String.match.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
