A message scanner finds ticket references regardless of capitalization and collects every occurrence. Inspecting its flags alongside the matches makes those two choices visible when you are debugging why another expression behaves differently on the same text.
The output includes gi and a list containing both ticket references. The i flag permits the mixed capitalization, while g asks String.match for every matching fragment. These choices explain why the second lowercase reference appears beside the first uppercase one. Reading the flags string is a useful diagnostic when two otherwise similar patterns yield different results on one notification.

Follow the value through the operation
The fixed expression uses g for global matching and i for case-insensitive matching. flags returns a canonical string describing those enabled flags; the match list is a separate inspection result. Reading flags neither changes the pattern nor modifies the incoming message.
flags reports enabled flags in a standardized order. It is not a copy of the exact suffix order originally typed by the developer, and it does not contain the ticket pattern itself. For a complete debugging record, inspect source and flags separately. This lesson keeps the pattern fixed and shows its effects through a short message instead of presenting a flag string as a full explanation of regex behavior.
The match array comes from String.match, not from the flags property. For this global expression it contains matching texts rather than the richer result array a non-global match can return. The example substitutes an empty array when no matches exist so the result panel presents a predictable list. That wrapper is an application choice; the underlying matching operation can return null.
Remove the second ticket and run the example again. The list becomes shorter but flags remains gi because input text does not reconfigure the expression. Add a lowercase third reference and see it included. Then enter text with no reference. An empty displayed list means no ticket fragments were found under this fixed rule; it does not mean the scanner's global or case-insensitive settings disappeared.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = "Ticket SUP-2048 and sup-4096";
const result = (()=>{const pattern=/sup-[0-9]{4}/gi;return {flags:pattern.flags,matches:data.match(pattern)||[]};})();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
{
"flags": "gi",
"matches": [
"SUP-2048",
"sup-4096"
]
}
The expression stays fixed while the message changes. Incoming text is data; this example neither evaluates it as code nor lets it redefine an unrestricted regular expression.
Check the boundary before reusing it
The flags property does not contain the pattern text, and its canonical order need not match the order originally typed. A flag description alone cannot explain every matching rule.
Remove the second ticket from the message and inspect the shorter match list. The flags remain gi because the expression's configuration did not change with its input.
Changed appends text without adding another ticket reference. The flags remain gi and the two collected matches stay the same. Input length alone does not imply a different match list, and incoming text does not reconfigure the expression.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
If two scanners disagree, compare their pattern configuration before changing the notification data. Share this runnable HTML as a link so a teammate can inspect gi alongside the collected references. Trying one, several, and no tickets makes the relationship between flags and results visible without a lengthy debugging transcript.
