A project already has a design tag, and a second teammate applies that same tag. You want the action to remain harmless instead of producing two identical chips. A Set makes repeated additions predictable while still letting genuinely new tags appear.
The first result still contains design and launch. That unchanged output is success: the requested design tag was already there. Change the proposed value to review and a third tag appears. Seeing both cases matters because a tag picker should tolerate someone clicking the same option twice without inventing an extra selection.

Try the result before changing the rule
Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Follow one run
The example creates a fresh Set from the existing tags and calls add with the proposed tag. Adding design again leaves two stored values. The method returns that same Set; Array.from is a separate display step that exposes its contents as JSON.
const data = {
"tags": [
"design",
"launch"
],
"tag": "design"
};
const result = (() => { const tags = new Set(data.tags); tags.add(data.tag); return Array.from(tags); })();
console.log(result);
The starting sample returns:
[
"design",
"launch"
]
The input is JSON-friendly, while the working collection is a Set. That distinction explains why the source panel can retain repeated values even when the result does not. When the result is a list, the wrapper converts the collection for display; a boolean or count is shown directly.

Check the case that changes the answer
Set.add compares strings exactly. Design and design are different values unless your application normalizes capitalization before adding tags. The method does not enforce your naming rules.
The native return value allows chaining, such as adding review and then approved to the same working Set. That does not mean add creates a new Set each time. This demo creates one fresh collection for each run, edits that collection, and displays its values; the JSON source is still the starting sample.
The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Make one edit you can predict
Change the proposed tag to review, run the example, and then add review to the starting tags. Compare a new addition with a repeat.
Use review as the proposed tag and expect design, launch, review in that order. Put review into the initial list as well and the result stays three tags long. Finally try Design with a capital letter: it becomes a different fourth value if your application has not normalized the spelling. If tag order matters to the interface, test an existing addition and a new addition separately. Repeating an existing value does not move it to the end.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.
A tag picker benefits from a shared rule about spelling and capitalization. Set the starting tags in the HTML, then share that runnable example through NOS with the person designing the picker. They can try a repeated tag and a new tag themselves. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.
