Set.symmetricDifference in JavaScript: spot mismatched attendees between lists

Explore Set.symmetricDifference through this working example: spot mismatched attendees between lists. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

The signup sheet and check-in list mostly agree, but Maya and Leo appear on only one side. You need those mismatches for a quick reconciliation. Symmetric difference returns values belonging to exactly one list, keeping the shared attendees out of the follow-up work.

The mismatches are Maya and Leo. Maya is on the signup sheet only, while Leo is in check-in only. Owen and Nina are shared and therefore disappear from the result. That is useful for spotting disagreement quickly, but the coordinator still needs the original lists to decide which mismatch represents a no-show and which represents an unexpected guest.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Spot mismatched attendees between lists: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

Both arrays are converted to Sets. symmetricDifference returns a new Set containing values exclusive to either side; Owen and Nina disappear because both lists contain them. Array.from displays the remaining names. The operation does not tell you which source each mismatch came from.

const data = {
  "sheet": [
    "Maya",
    "Owen",
    "Nina"
  ],
  "checkin": [
    "Owen",
    "Nina",
    "Leo"
  ]
};
const result = Array.from(new Set(data.sheet).symmetricDifference(new Set(data.checkin)));
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

[
  "Maya",
  "Leo"
]

The input is JSON-friendly, while the working collection is a Set. That distinction explains why the source panel can retain repeated values even when the result does not. When the result is a list, the wrapper converts the collection for display; a boolean or count is shown directly.

Check the case that changes the answer

A symmetric difference shows mismatched membership, not the direction of each mismatch. Keep separate directional differences if you need to label no-shows and unexpected arrivals differently.

If one side is empty, every value on the other side is a mismatch. If both sides contain the same values, the result is empty even when their orders differ. These checks compare membership, not row order or timestamps. Duplicate names within one array collapse before the comparison begins.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Spot mismatched attendees between lists: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Add Maya to checkin, then Leo to sheet. Watch each mismatch disappear and identify which extra information you would need to distinguish missing attendees from unexpected arrivals.

Add Maya to checkin and expect Leo alone. Then add Leo to sheet and expect an empty result. Swap the two source arrays and the mismatched membership remains the same, though you should not build labels from that sequence. Use difference in each direction when the follow-up requires separate explanations. Do not turn every mismatch into the same warning. The follow-up differs when somebody was invited but absent and when somebody arrived without an invitation record.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

A reconciliation conversation is clearer with both lists on screen. Put anonymized sample names in the HTML and share the runnable comparison through NOS, so a teammate can try one missing registration and one unexpected arrival before deciding how to label each mismatch. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Set.symmetricDifference do in this example?

Both arrays are converted to Sets. symmetricDifference returns a new Set containing values exclusive to either side; Owen and Nina disappear because both lists contain them. Array.from displays the remaining names. The operation does not tell you which source each mismatch came from.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Set.symmetricDifference?

A symmetric difference shows mismatched membership, not the direction of each mismatch. Keep separate directional differences if you need to label no-shows and unexpected arrivals differently.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
