Set.difference in JavaScript: find invitees who have not replied

Explore Set.difference through this working example: find invitees who have not replied. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

Three people were invited to a planning session, and Owen has already replied. A reminder should go to Maya and Nina rather than everyone again. Difference expresses that one-way subtraction and makes the pending names visible before any message is sent.

The pending list contains Maya and Nina. Owen disappears because replied includes him. This result represents invited people still awaiting a response, which is exactly the audience for a reminder draft. It does not include an unexpected reply from someone outside the original invite list, and it does not claim the replies are current server data.

Find invitees who have not replied: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Find invitees who have not replied: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The invited Set is the receiver and the replied Set is the exclusion list. difference returns a new Set containing invited values that are absent from replied. The display converts that result into an array. Swapping the two collections answers a different question rather than producing the same result.

const data = {
  "invited": [
    "Maya",
    "Owen",
    "Nina"
  ],
  "replied": [
    "Owen"
  ]
};
const result = Array.from(new Set(data.invited).difference(new Set(data.replied)));
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

[
  "Maya",
  "Nina"
]

The input is JSON-friendly, while the working collection is a Set. That distinction explains why the source panel can retain repeated values even when the result does not. When the result is a list, the wrapper converts the collection for display; a boolean or count is shown directly.

Check the case that changes the answer

Set.difference is directional and requires newer runtime support. Reversing the receiver and argument finds replies from people outside the invite list instead of invitees awaiting a reply.

Subtracting an empty replied Set leaves all invited people in the result. An empty invited Set produces no pending invitees regardless of replies. The operation returns a new Set, so the original invitation list remains available for reporting totals or calculating a separate list of confirmed attendees afterward.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Find invitees who have not replied: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Add Nina to replied and rerun. Then reverse the two arrays in your own code and explain why the new result answers a different question.

Add Nina to replied and expect only Maya to remain pending. Add Leo to replied too and that result still contains only Maya, because Leo was never invited. Reverse the receiver and argument to find unexpected replies; with Leo present, that different operation can return Leo instead of the pending invitees. Label both collections before subtracting them. Writing invited and replied next to the inputs makes it much harder to accidentally reverse the reminder audience calculation.

Find invitees who have not replied: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Find invitees who have not replied: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Reminder audiences are easy to reverse accidentally. Label the two sample lists in the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS with another coordinator. Ask them to confirm that a replied guest disappears from pending while an unexpected reply never becomes a pending invitee. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Set.difference do in this example?

The invited Set is the receiver and the replied Set is the exclusion list. difference returns a new Set containing invited values that are absent from replied. The display converts that result into an array. Swapping the two collections answers a different question rather than producing the same result.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Set.difference?

Set.difference is directional and requires newer runtime support. Reversing the receiver and argument finds replies from people outside the invite list instead of invitees awaiting a reply.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
