setters in JavaScript: validate a booking's seat update

Explore setters through this working example: validate a booking's seat update. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A booking editor should reject negative or oversized seat updates instead of leaving its internal count inconsistent. A setter gives the property assignment one controlled place to validate the proposed value before changing the booking's backing field.

The initial booking count is twenty-four and the requested update is thirty, so the result shows before twenty-four and after thirty. Assigning booking.seats does not directly create a new ordinary seats field here. It invokes the setter, which checks the value and then updates the separate backing field _seats. The getter exposes that backing value when the result is assembled.

Follow the value through the operation

Define a seats setter that checks an integer range before assigning _seats, and a getter that reads it. Assigning booking.seats triggers that validation. The result exposes the initial input and final booking count; only the newly created booking object is mutated.

The accepted range is an explicit example policy: an integer from zero through five hundred. Fractional values, negative counts, and larger numbers throw before the assignment to _seats. That ordering matters because it leaves the previous backing value intact when validation fails. The original JSON input object is also unchanged; the mutation belongs to the local booking object created by the calculation.

The setter must not assign this.seats inside its own body. That would invoke the same setter again and recurse rather than storing the count. A distinct backing field breaks that cycle. The leading underscore is only a naming convention in this object; it does not make _seats private or stop other code from assigning it directly. Private class fields would require a different implementation.

Try a requested update of zero and confirm that the boundary is accepted. Then try 501 or 2.5 and confirm a visible validation error. The initial value is supplied separately and is not validated by this setter until an update occurs, so a production factory should establish its initial invariant too. This small example focuses on the controlled update path rather than claiming to implement an entire secure booking model.

Run validate a booking's seat update and inspect the returned value

Run the same calculation in your code

The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.

const data = {"initial":24,"next":30};
const result = (()=>{const booking={_seats:data.initial,get seats(){return this._seats;},set seats(value){if(!Number.isInteger(value)||value<0||value>500)throw new Error('Seats must be an integer from 0 to 500');this._seats=value;}};booking.seats=data.next;return {before:data.initial,after:booking.seats};})();
console.log(result);

The original input produces this result:

{
  "before": 24,
  "after": 30
}

The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.

Check the boundary before reusing it

Assigning to the same property inside its setter causes recursive setter calls. Use a distinct backing field, and remember this example's initial value is supplied separately from the validated update.

Try a valid update, then a negative value or a value above five hundred. Confirm the invalid assignment throws before the backing field receives it.

Changed begins with twenty-five seats and requests thirty-one. The update is accepted, so the result shows those two values. Try 501 manually to exercise rejection; the valid preset does not establish the upper-bound error path by itself.

A compact validate a booking's seat update example to copy and adapt

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.

Before trusting the seat update path, review both an accepted boundary and a rejected value. Share the runnable HTML as a link so a teammate can try zero, 501, and a fraction. Their checks should establish the invariant before you extend the example to initial-value validation or a fuller booking model.

Questions people ask

What does setters do in this example?

Define a seats setter that checks an integer range before assigning _seats, and a getter that reads it. Assigning booking.seats triggers that validation. The result exposes the initial input and final booking count; only the newly created booking object is mutated.

What is the main mistake to avoid with setters?

Assigning to the same property inside its setter causes recursive setter calls. Use a distinct backing field, and remember this example's initial value is supplied separately from the validated update.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
