An invoice preview wants a total that always reflects its item's current price and quantity. A getter computes that value when the preview reads a property, avoiding a separately stored total that could become stale after an edit.
The item starts with a price of eighteen and quantity four, so reading total yields 72. total is not initialized as a separately stored numeric field. Its getter multiplies the item's current price and quantity at the moment the property is read. That keeps the relationship visible when an invoice preview changes quantity between two reads.

Follow the value through the operation
Define total with get syntax on the item object. Reading item.total invokes the getter and returns the multiplication result, even though the call has no parentheses. The example exposes the input fields and computed total without changing the source data.
The access looks like an ordinary property read: item.total has no call parentheses. Behind that syntax, JavaScript invokes the getter with the item as its receiver. The returned number becomes the value of the read. This is why the getter can use this.price and this.quantity while the calling code treats total as one property of the record.
Nothing caches the calculation automatically. A later read executes the getter again, and a more expensive getter could repeat substantial work. This example keeps it to a cheap multiplication and avoids side effects so that a property read remains unsurprising. Do not hide a network request, destructive mutation, or costly workflow behind such a property merely because the syntax is concise.
Change quantity to five and inspect total ninety. In the copied code, first read total, then assign a new quantity on the same item and read total again. The getter should use the updated field without needing an independent total assignment. The source input panel is separate from that local item, so the example's nonmutating input claim does not imply the item's fields are frozen. It simply creates and inspects a new object for each calculation.

Run the same calculation in your code
The JavaScript below isolates this example’s calculation. The complete HTML also includes its editable input and result panels.
const data = {"price":18,"quantity":4};
const result = (()=>{const item={price:data.price,quantity:data.quantity,get total(){return this.price*this.quantity;}};return {price:item.price,quantity:item.quantity,total:item.total};})();
console.log(result);
The original input produces this result:
{
"price": 18,
"quantity": 4,
"total": 72
}
The function runs on plain in-memory data. Creating an object or invoking a method here does not save a booking, update a remote service, or synchronize another visitor’s changes.
Check the boundary before reusing it
A getter is executable behavior behind a property read, not an automatically cached field. Repeated reads can repeat its work, so avoid surprising expensive operations or side effects in simple computed properties.
Change the quantity and inspect the fresh total. In the copied snippet, update the item's quantity before reading total again rather than manually updating a stored total field.
Changed uses price nineteen and quantity five, so reading total yields ninety-five. The value is computed from those fields rather than updated as a separate stored total. Inspect that relationship before adding expensive behavior to a getter.

The editor expects valid JSON. If punctuation prevents a run, check the JSON parsing lesson before changing the calculation. If your copied page does not execute at all, check how JavaScript connects to HTML. The official MDN reference documents the underlying operation.
An invoice preview should show the current total after a quantity edit. Share this runnable HTML as a link so a teammate can inspect that relationship with another price and quantity. In the copied code, read total before and after an edit to verify computation rather than maintaining a second stored number.
