String.at in JavaScript: final reference character

Build final reference character with String.at. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A reference ends in a useful marker: INV-104 finishes with 4. String.at(-1) reads that final position without calculating the string length first.

The sample returns the string "4", not the number four. The method selects text from the reference; it does not parse a complete numeric identifier.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.at with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.at(-1) selects the final UTF-16 code unit. at(-2) selects the one before it, giving 0 for INV-104. Positive positions count from the beginning, so at(0) gives I.

Negative positions are relative to the end of the string. That makes the expression useful for an optional trailing marker whose location changes as the reference grows.

The source is unchanged after the operation. If you need the full suffix 104 rather than one selected position, use a range operation or a format-specific extraction instead. Selecting the last unit and reading a multi-digit number are different tasks.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "INV-104";
const result = data.at(-1);
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"4"

A complete HTML starter for String.at; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

An index outside the valid range returns undefined. charAt behaves differently at that boundary: it returns an empty string. Do not write a fallback that assumes the two methods return the same missing value.

String.at also reads UTF-16 code units rather than complete graphemes. A trailing emoji can occupy more than one unit, so at(-1) may return only part of it. This reference uses ordinary letters, digits, and a dash to keep the selection unambiguous.

Make the behavior your own

Try INV-105 and confirm that the result changes to the string 5. Then try an empty string and inspect the missing result.

In the copied starter, compare at(-2), at(99), and charAt(99). Use JSON-style quoted output for strings so an empty string is not mistaken for missing output. Finally, add data.at(-1) ?? 'No marker' when your interface must always display a readable label.

A second final reference character sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second final reference character sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.at. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A reference-marker rule should be clear for both ordinary references and unfinished input. Share the complete HTML using HTML to link and ask someone to test those boundaries. NOS makes the demonstration easy to open; it does not validate the reference against an external system.

Questions people ask

What does String.at do in this example?

at(-1) returns 4. Negative positions count backward from the string's end.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.at?

An invalid index returns undefined rather than charAt's empty string. UTF-16 code-unit limitations still apply.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
