String.charAt in JavaScript: simple contact initials

Build simple contact initials with String.charAt. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A contact card needs a simple initial when no avatar is available. For the name Mina, String.charAt(0) returns M without splitting the entire name into an array.

The example builds a single-letter initial from a basic Latin name. It also exposes the empty-name case, because an avatar fallback should remain readable before a name is entered.

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.charAt with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.charAt(0) reads the UTF-16 code unit at index zero and returns it as a string. With Mina, that code unit is the letter M.

The method does not change the source name. You can use the returned letter for a badge while retaining the full name for its adjacent label.

For an index beyond the string's range, charAt returns an empty string. That differs from String.at, which returns undefined for an out-of-range index. Knowing the actual missing result helps you choose an appropriate fallback.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "Mina";
const result = data.charAt(0);
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"M"
The starter shows the String.charAt operation beside its returned value and source.

Choose Copy code below to get the full HTML file, including its script and styles. Save it as index.html and open it in a browser. The editable input uses JSON; a string needs surrounding double quotes, while an array needs square brackets.

A complete HTML starter for String.charAt; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

A UTF-16 code unit is not always a complete visible character. Some emoji use multiple code units, and some visible letters contain combining marks. charAt is therefore a simple initial extractor for this sample, not a complete international-name segmentation strategy.

A leading space also becomes the extracted character. If your form permits surrounding whitespace, trim the name before selecting its initial. Do not assume a returned string is meaningful just because the input was non-empty.

Make the behavior your own

Replace Mina with Sam and inspect the S result. Then try an empty string and a name with a leading space. Those cases reveal two separate needs: a blank-name fallback and deliberate cleanup.

In the copied starter, use data.trim().charAt(0) || '?' to give this simple badge a question mark when no initial remains. Try an emoji-led name as well, and decide whether your real audience needs a more capable visible-character rule.

A second simple contact initials sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second simple contact initials sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.charAt. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A fallback avatar needs review with missing names as well as ordinary names. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can test both. Keep the roster fictional; this page demonstrates the initial rule without creating a shared contacts database.

Questions people ask

What does String.charAt do in this example?

charAt(0) returns the first UTF-16 code unit as a string. Mina produces M.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.charAt?

Out-of-range positions return an empty string. A code unit is not always a complete emoji or visible character.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
