String.localeCompare in JavaScript: international name ordering

Build international name ordering with String.localeCompare. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A name list needs an explicit ordering rule. Comparing Mina with Sam should tell the sorter which comes first, without asking you to invent a universal alphabetical ranking yourself. String.localeCompare() provides a locale-aware comparison.

The result is negative when Mina comes before Sam in the chosen English locale. Read the sign of that number, rather than treating one exact numeric value as the rule.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.localeCompare with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.localeCompare('Sam', 'en') compares the source name with Sam using the English locale. A negative result means the source comes first, a positive result means it comes after, and zero means the comparison considers them equivalent under its rules.

The demo's browser displays a particular negative number for Mina. JavaScript does not require every implementation to use exactly -1 or 1, so your logic should test less than zero, greater than zero, or equality with zero.

The method does not sort an array by itself. It provides the comparison result that an array sort callback can use, such as (a, b) => a.localeCompare(b, 'en').

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "Mina";
const result = data.localeCompare('Sam', 'en');
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

-1
The starter shows the String.localeCompare operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for String.localeCompare; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

Ordering depends on the chosen locale and options. Accents, case, and numeric-looking text may need rules that suit your audience. Keep the locale explicit when consistent behavior matters, rather than relying on an unspecified environment default.

For many comparisons, create an Intl.Collator and reuse its compare function instead of repeatedly configuring localeCompare calls. That is a useful extension for a large name list, but the single comparison here keeps the direction and return-value contract easy to inspect.

Make the behavior your own

Change the input to Sam and expect zero when comparing it with Sam. Then try Zoe and inspect a positive result. Those three cases show the contract more clearly than memorizing the first number displayed.

In the copied starter, sort a small array of fictional names using localeCompare with en. Add an accented name and decide which locale matches your intended readership. Finally, label the result Comes before, Equivalent, or Comes after based on its sign.

A second international name ordering sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second international name ordering sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.localeCompare. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A name-ordering rule should be reviewed with names representative of the intended language. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can test that order. The example compares local sample strings; it does not maintain a shared directory or promise one universal alphabetical order.

Questions people ask

What does String.localeCompare do in this example?

localeCompare returns a negative, positive, or zero result. Mina comes before Sam in the chosen English locale.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.localeCompare?

Only the result's sign matters; do not assume a negative result must be exactly -1.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
