String.lastIndexOf in JavaScript: filename from a nested path

Build filename from a nested path with String.lastIndexOf. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An asset path reads assets/images/banner.webp. You need its final filename, so the useful separator is the last slash rather than the first. String.lastIndexOf() locates that final occurrence.

The demo returns index 13 for the slash before banner.webp. Once you have that position, a slice beginning one place later can extract the filename.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.lastIndexOf with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.lastIndexOf('/') searches for the final matching slash and returns its zero-based position. It returns a number rather than the filename itself.

The first slash separates assets and images; the second separates images and banner.webp. Selecting the final occurrence makes the expression work with more than one folder level.

To obtain the filename, use data.slice(data.lastIndexOf('/') + 1). Adding one skips the separator itself. The source path remains unchanged, so you can still display or retain the complete path separately.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "assets/images/banner.webp";
const result = data.lastIndexOf('/');
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

13

A complete HTML starter for String.lastIndexOf; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

When the slash is absent, lastIndexOf returns -1. Adding one gives zero, so the slice expression above returns the entire source as the filename. That is a useful deliberate fallback for a path containing only banner.webp.

A path ending with a slash produces an empty final segment. Also, this example treats forward slashes literally: Windows backslashes, query strings, and URL encoding are not automatically interpreted. If you are handling full URLs, use an appropriate URL parser rather than assuming a simple string path covers every case.

Make the behavior your own

Try banner.webp with no folders and inspect the -1 result. Then try assets/banner.webp and compare its separator position with the original nested path.

In the copied starter, add the slice expression to display the filename beside the separator index. Test a trailing slash and an empty input too. Decide whether an empty final segment should show No filename or be rejected before your interface uses it in a download label.

A second filename from a nested path sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second filename from a nested path sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.lastIndexOf. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A filename helper is worth reviewing with both bare names and nested paths. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can try the boundaries you handle. The page demonstrates string parsing, not filesystem access, and does not upload or expose the files named in the sample.

Questions people ask

What does String.lastIndexOf do in this example?

lastIndexOf returns the final matching index, 13 for this path.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.lastIndexOf?

No match returns -1. Adding one before slicing lets a path without folders return the whole filename.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
