A tag field arrives as one string, while a page needs separate chips. The separator defines where each chip begins and ends.
The input design,writing,coding is one string, but a tag picker needs three separate labels. This example produces those three entries with a comma separator, then shows where casual typing introduces extra cleanup work.

Try the working result
The result panel shows an array containing design, writing, and coding. Add a fourth comma-separated tag and update the preview; it becomes another entry. The source remains one string, because split returns the pieces rather than changing the original text.
Use Changed data for another preset, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. The controls use sample data; they do not contact a backend.

Follow the code
split returns an array divided at the comma separators. The original string stays unchanged.
The comma passed to split is the boundary to search for. The separator itself is omitted from the resulting pieces. This gives the page a useful array to iterate when rendering tag chips. It does not trim those pieces or decide whether a tag is acceptable.
const data = "design,writing,coding";
const result = data.split(',');
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
[
"design",
"writing",
"coding"
]
Compare a result entry with the original string: the comma has gone, but any space next to it stays part of the entry. That is a parsing choice, not a styling problem.

Take the small version apart
The starter uses the same operation with a simpler layout. Choose Edit code to inspect its HTML and script, or Copy code to save the complete example as index.html. Open that file in your browser to run it without a framework. JSON inputs need double-quoted keys and strings.

Avoid the common mistake
Spaces around commas remain in each piece. Trim each resulting piece when accepting casually typed tags.
Try design, writing, coding. The second and third entries begin with spaces. For casually typed tags, data.split(",").map(tag => tag.trim()).filter(Boolean) trims each piece and removes empty pieces. Decide whether removing empty tags is right for your field before applying that cleanup.
Change one rule, then check it
Add spaces after the commas, then clean the chips with map and trim.
An empty string split on a comma returns [""], not []. Two consecutive commas also create an empty piece. Those cases explain why a tag interface can show a blank chip unless it handles empty entries deliberately. Check them before changing the chip styling.

The MDN reference covers the full syntax and browser support. If your saved page does not run its script, the HTML and JavaScript guide helps check the file setup.
Put the example in someone else's hands
A tag field looks simple until people type it differently. Let a reviewer try extra commas, spaces, and an empty field in the complete example. Sharing that interaction helps you settle the parsing rule before building a larger form.
Copy the complete HTML and use HTML to link to share the runnable file through NOS. Each visitor can try the browser-side example; this does not synchronize edits or add a shared database.
