String.toUpperCase in JavaScript: consistent review badge

Build consistent review badge with String.toUpperCase. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

A review badge should read READY FOR REVIEW even when its input arrives as ready for review. String.toUpperCase() converts the display text while preserving the original phrase.

The finished result is READY FOR REVIEW. This is a formatting choice for the badge, not a test that the underlying work is actually ready.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.toUpperCase with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

data.toUpperCase() returns the uppercase version of the source string. The words and spaces stay in order, and the original data remains lowercase.

Use the returned value in the badge if uppercase is your intended style. If you only need a visual uppercase appearance in ordinary HTML, CSS text-transform can provide a different presentation-only approach. JavaScript conversion is useful when the actual returned string is needed elsewhere too.

The operation does not validate an allowed status. Any supplied phrase can be uppercased, including a typo or unrelated sentence. Keep your status choices separate from the way you display them.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "ready for review";
const result = data.toUpperCase();
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"READY FOR REVIEW"
The starter shows the String.toUpperCase operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for String.toUpperCase; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

Unicode case conversion can change length. For example, uppercasing the German sharp s can produce SS. Do not assume that every source character maps to exactly one output character or that a previous index still refers to the same place afterward.

An empty string remains empty, and punctuation is not transformed into letters. If the badge needs a default label, provide one explicitly. Locale-specific requirements may also call for toLocaleUpperCase instead of a one-size-fits-all casing rule.

Make the behavior your own

Try ready, needs review, and an empty string. Decide whether the last result should show no badge or a label such as STATUS NOT SET.

In the copied starter, try the word Straße and compare source and result lengths. Then keep the raw status and its uppercase display value in separate variables. Finally, check how a long badge wraps in the HTML layout: converting text does not guarantee that it will fit a fixed-width container.

A second consistent review badge sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second consistent review badge sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.toUpperCase. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A badge needs feedback on both wording and layout, especially with long or international text. Copy the complete HTML and share it through HTML to link so someone can try realistic labels. This prototype formats sample text; it does not grant approval or update a shared workflow status.

Questions people ask

What does String.toUpperCase do in this example?

toUpperCase returns a new uppercase string for the badge.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.toUpperCase?

This is formatting, not validation. Some Unicode case conversions change string length.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
