A booking importer should give a useful result when pasted text is malformed instead of leaving the preview blank. A try catch wrapper distinguishes successful parsing from a recoverable input error while keeping the customer facing message short.
The booking importer starts with a string containing JSON for four seats and returns ok true beside the parsed booking. If that inner text is malformed, the same preview returns a clear error result instead of pretending the import worked. This is a recovery pattern around an operation that can throw, not another guide to every detail of the JSON format.

Build the working example
const data = "{\"seats\":4}";
const result = (()=>{try{return {ok:true,booking:JSON.parse(data)};}catch(error){return {ok:false,message:'Booking text is not valid JSON'};}})();
console.log(result);
JSON.parse runs inside try. The valid sample returns a booking object with four seats and ok true. If parsing throws, control moves to catch, which returns ok false and a clear message. That fallback keeps the operation's result visible.
The outer input editor first reads a JSON string value. Inside the function, JSON.parse reads the text inside that string as the booking payload. The try block returns a success object only if that second parse succeeds. When it throws, catch returns ok false and the chosen message. This is deliberately distinct from the existing JSON.parse lesson: the focus here is deciding how success and failure leave the operation. Parsing also does not prove that the result contains seats or that the count is valid. Those shape and business checks belong after successful parsing.
The original input returns:
{
"ok": true,
"booking": {
"seats": 4
}
}

Test the boundary that matters
Remove the closing brace from the booking text while keeping it a valid quoted string in the outer editor. Update the preview and expect ok false with Booking text is not valid JSON. If you instead break the outer JSON quoting, the demo reports an input parsing error before this function runs. That distinction matters because the article's catch handles the inner booking parse only. An empty string is valid as an outer input value but invalid as a JSON booking payload, so it should take the recovery branch.

Catch handles thrown exceptions from the try block; it does not prove the parsed data has the required fields. Validate the booking shape separately after parsing succeeds.
If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.
Make one useful change
Remove a closing brace from the input and confirm the error message appears. Then restore valid JSON with missing seats and consider the separate validation needed.
For the exercise, restore valid inner JSON without a seats field, such as an empty object encoded as a string. This parser still returns ok true because the syntax is valid; the missing booking requirement has not been checked. Add a required integer seat validation after parsing if the real importer needs it. Use the JSON.parse guide to review quoting and format rules, while keeping this recovery structure focused on returning a useful success or error outcome.
The import owner can now test broken booking text without interpreting a blank screen. Share the complete recovery preview using NOS and ask them to try a valid payload, invalid text, and missing seats. Those three results identify where parsing ends and domain validation begins, before the same recovery pattern is connected to a real booking importer.
For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: try catch.
