typeof in JavaScript: mixed import type labels

Explore typeof through this working example: mixed import type labels. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

An import preview needs to explain why a column contains mixed values. This type inspector labels the number, text, Boolean, null, array, and object separately enough to show where typeof helps and where an extra check is needed.

The finished import view reports a number for 12, a string for quoted 12, and a Boolean for true. It also shows why the extra flags exist: typeof reports object for null, arrays, and ordinary objects. An import preview needs to separate these shapes more carefully before it decides which values belong in a text column or a list field.

Build the working example

const data = [12,"12",true,null,[],{}];
const result = (()=>{if(!Array.isArray(data))return 'Enter a sample array';return data.map(value=>({value,type:typeof value,isArray:Array.isArray(value),isNull:value===null}));})();
console.log(result);

The operator returns a type name string for each value. Numeric 12 and textual 12 receive different names, while arrays and null both report object. Separate isArray and isNull flags reveal those distinctions without pretending typeof can identify every data shape.

Each sample becomes a record containing its original value, a typeof label, an array flag, and a null flag. Typeof provides a string such as number or string without modifying the sample. Array.isArray then recognizes the list shape, while a strict comparison with null recognizes the explicit empty value. This is not the same as instanceof: instanceof asks whether an object's prototype chain includes a particular constructor's prototype, which can be sensitive to separate browser realms. Here the import question is the basic value shape, so the three direct checks are easier to interpret.

The original input returns:

Run the mixed import type labels operation and compare its source with the output.

Test the boundary that matters

Replace the ordinary object with an object containing name Avery, then inspect its label. It still reports object, with both flags false. A new empty array reports object with isArray true. Null reports object with isNull true. An empty outer array produces no rows because there are no samples to inspect. If the input itself is an object rather than the required sample array, the function returns an input message. These are distinct outcomes, so keep an invalid outer container separate from a legitimately empty list of samples.

Changing the sample reveals the behavior of the mixed import type labels.

Edit the mixed import type labels sample and test the cases described above.

Typeof null is object for historical reasons. Arrays also report object. Test null explicitly and use Array.isArray when a list is required.

If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.

Make one useful change

Replace one sample with an object containing a name, then with an empty array. Keep the extra flags and explain the remaining object labels.

For the exercise, include a normal object and an empty array in the same sample list. Both should receive the object type label, but only the array should set isArray true. If your imported records need a name field, add a property and value check after this basic shape inspection. Knowing that something is an object does not prove it has the right fields, and a type label cannot replace that domain validation.

An import owner can use this view to discuss mismatched data without reading raw JavaScript diagnostics. Share the complete type inspection page through NOS with representative sample values. Once the expected shapes are agreed, add the required field checks to the actual importer and keep this small page as an understandable explanation of why certain inputs are accepted or rejected.

For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: typeof.

Questions people ask

What does typeof do in this example?

The operator returns a type name string for each value. Numeric 12 and textual 12 receive different names, while arrays and null both report object. Separate isArray and isNull flags reveal those distinctions without pretending typeof can identify every data shape.

What is the main mistake to avoid with typeof?

Typeof null is object for historical reasons. Arrays also report object. Test null explicitly and use Array.isArray when a list is required.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
