Array.findLast in JavaScript: find the latest completed task

Explore Array.findLast through this working example: find the latest completed task. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A task list follows the order work was recorded. Draft and Publish are complete, but you need the last completed task rather than the first one. findLast starts at the end and returns the matching task itself, making that choice visible without reversing the list.

Publish is returned as the whole task object because it is the final entry marked done. Draft also qualifies, but searching from the end reaches Publish first. This is useful when the source order already has meaning. You can use the returned object's title directly, rather than finding an index and performing a second array lookup.

Find the latest completed task: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Find the latest completed task: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The predicate accepts only tasks whose done field is exactly true. findLast examines Publish first and returns that object immediately. If no task matches, the result is undefined. The method returns an element rather than its index and does not change the order of the source array.

const data = [
  {
    "title": "Draft",
    "done": true
  },
  {
    "title": "Review",
    "done": false
  },
  {
    "title": "Publish",
    "done": true
  }
];
const result = data.findLast(task => task.done === true);
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

{
  "title": "Publish",
  "done": true
}

Keep the input array beside the result while testing. The source provides the items and their order; the expression defines what you retrieve or build from them. A changed result is not evidence that the source was edited. This particular callback or lookup leaves that input unchanged.

Check the case that changes the answer

Last means last in the array's current order, not latest by timestamp. Sort or compare dates separately if the source list does not already reflect the chronology you need.

The strict true comparison rejects values such as the string true or the number one. That is intentional for this sample's boolean schema. If a real input permits different representations, normalize them before searching. The missing-match result is undefined, so check for it before reading result.title or another property.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Find the latest completed task: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Set Publish to false and rerun to expose Draft. Then set every done value to false and decide how your interface should present the missing-match case.

Mark Publish false and expect Draft. Mark Draft false as well and expect undefined. Insert another completed task at the end and that new object wins. These changes test the predicate and order separately; adding a newer timestamp to an earlier object would not change its position in this array-based search. If the chosen task drives another screen, handle undefined before accessing its fields. A useful empty state is better than a crash when nothing is completed.

Find the latest completed task: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Find the latest completed task: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Before using the selected task in a status card, test the case where no task is completed. Share the runnable HTML through NOS with sample tasks so a teammate can compare the returned object with undefined and help choose an understandable empty-state message. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Array.findLast do in this example?

The predicate accepts only tasks whose done field is exactly true. findLast examines Publish first and returns that object immediately. If no task matches, the result is undefined. The method returns an element rather than its index and does not change the order of the source array.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.findLast?

Last means last in the array's current order, not latest by timestamp. Sort or compare dates separately if the source list does not already reflect the chronology you need.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
