Array.findLastIndex in JavaScript: locate the last low-stock item

Explore Array.findLastIndex through this working example: locate the last low-stock item. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

An inventory review needs the position of the final item with fewer than five units. You may use that position to focus a row in a separate interface. findLastIndex returns the index directly, so the example distinguishes a matching row position from the row's actual contents.

The starting result is two, the zero-based position of clips. Pens also has low stock, but clips is encountered first when searching backward. A position is useful for focusing an interface row or updating a separate array deliberately. It is not the stock quantity or the item object, so label the result as an index.

Locate the last low-stock item: source values beside the original result.
Locate the last low-stock item: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Locate the last low-stock item: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The predicate checks whether stock is below five. Scanning from the end finds clips at index two and returns that number. A list without any matching item produces minus one. The method reads the array without editing it, and zero remains a valid matching position.

const data = [
  {
    "item": "pens",
    "stock": 3
  },
  {
    "item": "folders",
    "stock": 18
  },
  {
    "item": "clips",
    "stock": 2
  }
];
const result = data.findLastIndex(item => item.stock < 5);
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

2

Keep the input array beside the result while testing. The source provides the items and their order; the expression defines what you retrieve or build from them. A changed result is not evidence that the source was edited. This particular callback or lookup leaves that input unchanged.

Check the case that changes the answer

Do not use the returned index as a truthiness check. Zero identifies the first item, while minus one is truthy in JavaScript despite indicating that no element matched.

The callback checks a property, unlike lastIndexOf, which checks a particular value. Here stock below five is a match, while exactly five is not. Missing or incorrectly typed stock fields need their own validation rather than silently becoming trustworthy inventory data. A returned index should be checked before accessing the array.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Locate the last low-stock item: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Raise clips to ten and rerun, then raise pens too. Compare a valid zero result with minus one before using the index to select an item.

Raise clips to ten and expect zero because pens becomes the final remaining match. Raise pens to five and expect minus one. Then lower folders to four and expect one. These three results are a useful guard against treating zero as failure or minus one as a valid row position. Check the index before using it to focus a row. A missing match should lead to a clear message instead of accidentally selecting an unrelated inventory entry.

Locate the last low-stock item: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

A row-focus interaction should handle both index zero and no match. Put representative stock items into the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS, so the person building the interface can test those cases before connecting the index to an actual table row. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Array.findLastIndex do in this example?

The predicate checks whether stock is below five. Scanning from the end finds clips at index two and returns that number. A list without any matching item produces minus one. The method reads the array without editing it, and zero remains a valid matching position.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.findLastIndex?

Do not use the returned index as a truthiness check. Zero identifies the first item, while minus one is truthy in JavaScript despite indicating that no element matched.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
