Array.lastIndexOf in JavaScript: locate the most recent exact status label

Explore Array.lastIndexOf through this working example: locate the most recent exact status label. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A status history contains queued twice, once before processing and once after a retry. You need the position of the final exact queued label. lastIndexOf searches from the right and returns that position without changing the stored sequence or inventing a timestamp.

The last queued entry is at index two. Index zero also contains queued, but the backward lookup selects the later occurrence in the current sequence. A status timeline can use that position to focus an entry without altering history. The lookup is exact: it does not interpret queued as a category or inspect fields inside a record.

Locate the most recent exact status label: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Locate the most recent exact status label: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The example searches the array for the string queued using strict equality. It returns index two, which points to the second queued entry. A missing label produces minus one. This is a value lookup rather than a predicate search, and the source array is not rearranged.

const data = [
  "queued",
  "running",
  "queued",
  "done"
];
const result = data.lastIndexOf('queued');
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

2

Keep the input array beside the result while testing. The source provides the items and their order; the expression defines what you retrieve or build from them. A changed result is not evidence that the source was edited. This particular callback or lookup leaves that input unchanged.

Check the case that changes the answer

lastIndexOf compares values with strict equality and cannot match NaN. It also does not search inside objects; use findLastIndex when a match depends on an object's property.

An optional fromIndex can limit where the backward search starts. Leaving it out uses the end of the array. A negative starting index counts from the end before searching backward. Keep that parameter separate from the returned position, which is still a zero-based index measured from the beginning of the array.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Locate the most recent exact status label: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Move queued to the final position and rerun. Replace both queued entries with another label and confirm the missing-match result before indexing into the array.

Append queued and expect index four. Replace every queued string with waiting and expect minus one. For a focused extension, call lastIndexOf with a starting position of one on the original array and expect zero. That checks an earlier segment of the history instead of selecting the later queued entry. For histories containing objects, an exact status string lookup is no longer enough. Search an explicit field with a predicate rather than expecting this method to inspect records.

Locate the most recent exact status label: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Locate the most recent exact status label: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

When reviewing a status timeline, put repeated queued labels into the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS. A teammate can move the final occurrence and check which position is returned, making the intended search direction clearer than a static timeline screenshot alone. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Array.lastIndexOf do in this example?

The example searches the array for the string queued using strict equality. It returns index two, which points to the second queued entry. A missing label produces minus one. This is a value lookup rather than a predicate search, and the source array is not rearranged.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Array.lastIndexOf?

lastIndexOf compares values with strict equality and cannot match NaN. It also does not search inside objects; use findLastIndex when a match depends on an object's property.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
