Array.toString in JavaScript: see the default string form of an array

Explore Array.toString through this working example: see the default string form of an array. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A list of attendee names unexpectedly appears as a comma-separated string when inserted into a message. You want to see what the array's default string conversion actually produces. This example shows that compact text while keeping the original names available for comparison.

The finished string is Maya,Owen,Nina. It contains no brackets, quotes, or spaces after the commas. That simple result explains why an array embedded in display text may look different from the JSON you started with. It is convenient for seeing default conversion behavior, but a reader-facing attendee list often needs deliberately chosen punctuation.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Follow one run

Array.toString normally delegates to join with a comma separator. The three names therefore become Maya,Owen,Nina with no spaces added. The result is a string, not an array or JSON representation. Reading that string does not change the stored names or their order.

const data = [
  "Maya",
  "Owen",
  "Nina"
];
const result = data.toString();
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

"Maya,Owen,Nina"

Keep the input array beside the result while testing. The source provides the items and their order; the expression defines what you retrieve or build from them. A changed result is not evidence that the source was edited. This particular callback or lookup leaves that input unchanged.

Check the case that changes the answer

This conversion is not a safe CSV serializer. Values containing commas are not quoted, and null or undefined entries become empty fields rather than explicit words.

Nested arrays also convert themselves to strings, which can flatten the apparent structure into more commas. A list containing null becomes an empty field at that position. Those details make the default string form unsuitable for reconstructing arbitrary original data. If structure matters, show JSON rather than assuming commas encode every boundary safely.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Make one edit you can predict

Add a name containing a comma and inspect the ambiguity. Compare this result with join(', ') for display text and JSON.stringify when you need structured data.

Add Lee, Jr. as one name and notice the extra comma is indistinguishable from a separator in this result. Use an empty array and expect an empty string. Compare join with a comma and space when making a readable label, and keep a structured representation when another program must recover the names. Choose this conversion because its punctuation matches your display needs, not because it is reversible. A comma-separated appearance alone does not provide a reliable data interchange format.

See the default string form of an array: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
See the default string form of an array: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Before settling on attendee-list punctuation, let someone try a name containing a comma. Share the runnable HTML through NOS with those sample names, so the ambiguity is visible. Then choose readable display formatting separately from any format needed to preserve the original data. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
