logical and in JavaScript: reservation eligibility flags

Explore logical and through this working example: reservation eligibility flags. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A reservation should proceed only after sign in and email confirmation. The preview combines those two requirements and shows the raw operator result beside a Boolean permission flag, so the rule remains understandable if the inputs later change.

The original permission card reports canReserve false and rawResult false. Sign in alone is not sufficient because confirmed is also required. Showing both fields keeps the lesson honest: logical AND supplies an operand value, and the surrounding Boolean conversion turns that value into the exact true or false flag expected by this interface.

Build the working example

const data = {"signedIn":true,"confirmed":false};
const result = data&&typeof data==='object' ? {canReserve:Boolean(data.signedIn&&data.confirmed),rawResult:data.signedIn&&data.confirmed} : 'Enter reservation flags';
console.log(result);

Logical AND stops at the first falsy operand; otherwise it returns the last operand. The sample signedIn value passes, but confirmed is false, producing a false permission. Boolean wraps the raw result when the interface specifically needs true or false.

Evaluation proceeds from left to right. A falsy signedIn value would stop the expression before confirmed is needed. With the supplied true value, the operator continues to confirmed and returns its false value. When both operands are true, it returns true. If confirmed were the string verified instead, the raw result would be that string, not a Boolean invented by the operator. Boolean then converts the raw result for canReserve. This is distinct from optional chaining, which handles a missing access path, and nullish coalescing, which selects a fallback for null or undefined rather than requiring two truthy conditions.

The original input returns:

{
  "canReserve": false,
  "rawResult": false
}

Run the reservation eligibility flags operation and compare its source with the output.

Test the boundary that matters

Set confirmed true and verify that both results become true. Next set confirmed to an empty string. The raw result should be empty text, while canReserve is false. With an empty object, signedIn is undefined and the first operand stops the check; the raw property may be omitted by JSON stringification because its value is undefined. That display detail should not be mistaken for a successful reservation. The Boolean flag remains false, and required input fields should still be validated in any real workflow.

Changing the sample reveals the behavior of the reservation eligibility flags.

Edit the reservation eligibility flags sample and test the cases described above.

AND can return a string, number, or object rather than a Boolean. Truthy flags also do not prove identity; a real permission check belongs on the server.

If the complete page stops before producing a result, compare it with the checks in HTML JavaScript not working.

Make one useful change

Set both flags true, then make confirmed an empty string. Explain why the raw result changes type while canReserve remains Boolean.

For the exercise, compare true with a nonempty status string and with an empty status string. The raw result follows the actual operand, while canReserve always has Boolean type. If your service requires literal Boolean flags, enforce that requirement before this expression instead of accepting every truthy string. A browser side eligibility badge can explain a state, but it cannot prove that a person is authenticated or authorize a real reservation by itself.

The local card gives a product teammate something concrete to review: which two states must be satisfied before the button becomes available? Share the complete eligibility preview through NOS so they can toggle the sample flags. Once the rule is agreed, enforce it with trusted account and confirmation data in the real reservation system rather than using this demonstration as an authorization check.

For the exact syntax and behavior, see MDN: logical AND.

Questions people ask

What does logical and do in this example?

Logical AND stops at the first falsy operand; otherwise it returns the last operand. The sample signedIn value passes, but confirmed is false, producing a false permission. Boolean wraps the raw result when the interface specifically needs true or false.

What is the main mistake to avoid with logical and?

AND can return a string, number, or object rather than a Boolean. Truthy flags also do not prove identity; a real permission check belongs on the server.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
