Map in JavaScript: build a stock lookup from item pairs

Explore Map through this working example: build a stock lookup from item pairs. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

Two stock updates arrive for the same notebook item. You want a lookup that keeps the latest supplied quantity instead of storing duplicate keys. Constructing a Map from entry pairs makes the overwrite visible and leaves the original update list available for comparison.

The finished entries contain notebook with fifteen and marker with eight. The later notebook update wins, but notebook keeps its original insertion position ahead of marker. That behavior is convenient for a final snapshot. It would be misleading for a transaction ledger, where twelve and fifteen might represent separate movements rather than competing final quantities.

Build a stock lookup from item pairs: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Build a stock lookup from item pairs: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The constructor reads each two-item entry as a key and value. The later notebook value replaces the earlier quantity without creating a second notebook key. Array.from displays the Map as entry pairs; it does not turn the Map into a JSON object or change the source array.

const data = [
  [
    "notebook",
    12
  ],
  [
    "marker",
    8
  ],
  [
    "notebook",
    15
  ]
];
const result = Array.from(new Map(data));
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

[
  [
    "notebook",
    15
  ],
  [
    "marker",
    8
  ]
]

The source uses entry pairs so you can see every key and value before the lookup is constructed. The working Map is separate from that source array. Converting its entries for display does not make the Map itself a JSON array, and reading it does not submit a catalog change.

Check the case that changes the answer

Duplicate keys overwrite values during construction. If those entries are transactions that should be added together, a Map constructor alone is the wrong aggregation strategy for your stock calculation.

A Map constructor expects an iterable of entry-like pairs. A plain object or an array of unrelated strings does not satisfy this sample shape. Each key can hold only one value in a given Map. Constructing the collection does not aggregate numbers, validate stock levels, or copy a history of overwritten values into the result.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Build a stock lookup from item pairs: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Change the second notebook quantity and add a new item pair. Compare overwriting an existing key with introducing a completely new key into the lookup.

Change the final notebook quantity to seventeen and expect seventeen to replace twelve. Add a folder pair and expect a third key after marker. Try an empty array and expect no entries. If you actually need accumulated stock movements, write an explicit addition rule rather than relying on this last-value-wins construction. The entry format keeps overwritten updates visible in the source. Preserve that source deliberately if you will need to explain how the final stock snapshot was derived.

Build a stock lookup from item pairs: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Build a stock lookup from item pairs: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Before importing stock updates, confirm that later quantities should replace earlier ones. Put representative entry pairs in the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS, so another person can see which notebook quantity wins and decide whether that matches the import rules. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Map do in this example?

The constructor reads each two-item entry as a key and value. The later notebook value replaces the earlier quantity without creating a second notebook key. Array.from displays the Map as entry pairs; it does not turn the Map into a JSON object or change the source array.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Map?

Duplicate keys overwrite values during construction. If those entries are transactions that should be added together, a Map constructor alone is the wrong aggregation strategy for your stock calculation.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
